I've applied to Rosemont at Hidden Creek apartments, is this a good apartment complex? A good area to live in for a single mom of 3? I hear a lot of talk about crime, what type of crime is going on? I live in Buffalo,NY and Murder is the top crime here, so I don't want to jump from the fire to the frying pan. Can anyone give me some advice on the overall reputation of Austin?

Austin is a great place to live. I'm just going to warn you about living on the east side though...that is where most of the crime is. Im not sure what the top crime is but I know on that side of town you'll find more drug deals and shady people. And the schools in that area will probably not be good for your three kids. Try a place in north, or northwest austin, even some of central Austin is fine. It is a fun place to live if you like to do outdoor things and listen to live music. Good luck!

Austin is definitely a safe city, although there are neighbourhoods you will want to avoid, such as "East Austin" meaning most anything East of IH-35. That is where the bulk of the crime occurs.

The suburbs are very nice to live in, if you can afford it and the commute. Round Rock was ranked the 13th safest city in America in 2005 (of which we are quite proud). They just opened up new toll roads that I imagine would make the traffic considerably better even if you don't use them.

If you would prefer to live closer in to the city, the Northwest area is quite nice (around Spicewood Springs, 360, etc.) and there is lots of shopping nearby on 183. I would like to move up there actually. Several of my friends live there and I have never heard of any crime happenings.

I am not sure where that apartment complex is, but if it is in the south near Slaughter Ln. then it should be fine. Westlake, Cedar Park, Pflugerville are also nice suburbs.

I hope you like Austin!

My family and myself are also moving to Austin at the end of March. I'm not sure about the specific apartment complex, but I know the crime rate is much lower than in Buffalo. Its very mellow, and in some higher end suburbs practically crime free.

The top crime in Austin is property damage--petty vandalism. The risk of personal injury from violent crime is extremely low here, even in the "bad" neighborhoods. Non-violent drug offenses are probably second or third to vandalism and theft from a vehicle (not theft OF a vehicle--that happens, too, but not frequently).

The apartment you've applied to is actually very close to where I live--a little sketchier than I would really recommend. I'd be willing to live there, but I've got friends and family all over the city and no kids. I would not recommend it to someone moving here for the first time. That area has a high theft rate.
Here's a map from an apartment-rating website:

Try to stay between the two major yellow roads (IH35 and MoPac) running down the right and left sides. Here are a couple of complexes that might work for you--I moved you a few miles west of the one you chose.

(A friend of mine lived in the above, Brownstone Apartments, during college. They fix important things, like plumbing and electrical, the day you call, but they may never fix the minor stuff, like the chain on the ceiling fan or whatever. It appears to be sketchy from the outside but is actually quite safe, is right on the best, most convenient bus route in town and is CHEAP. Not quiet, but kid friendly with two pools--with fences--and a playscape. It's also very convenient to just about anywhere; I loved living in that neighborhood--I lived 4 blocks away from that friend. If you can afford one of the other complexes, avoid this one for its noise and minor irritations, but if you are on a tight budget, this is cheap, convenient and adequate.)

I live on the east side and I quite like my neighborhood. However, I've lived here for 10 years and know the areas really well. A good rule of thumb if you are unfamiliar with the area is to stay south of Rundberg (a major city street), west of IH35, north of Slaughter Lane. Go as far west as you like, just bear in mind that the further west you go, the richer the area and you will begin to encounter privelege and exclusivity. A good rule of thumb to avoid that is to stay east of Loop 1/MoPac.

Also bear in mind that the city was designed with very few east-west thoroughfares. When planning where you live, try to make your drive to work be along a north-south path.

One more thing to remember--if you aren't from the south, you'll have a different definition of "cockroach." There are two kinds here. One you know--a small pest, a sign of infestation. There's another, larger variety that is a water-bug that comes into homes from the outside from time to time. All houses have them sometimes. Even the million-dollar houses. Go to Home Depot and ask for Boric Acid and put it in all the crevices under your sinks, behind the toilet, under the refrigerator.

Good luck!

Austin is great. It is a great place for kids to grow up. Its very cultural. My dad lives in Round Rock (right outside of Austin) and it is beautiful! The traffic is horrible in Austin though!
