the true natives ever actually experience it? Do you know what the real essence of Austin is?

It has to be the ONLY Austin that matters.
The essence is ... You can truly be whoever and whatever you want, anywhere. Why do people come to Austin?

It has culture -live music, plays, museums, it has natural beauty and great weather (save for the 6 weeks of HOT summer), it is diverse, tolerant, and weird. The University has a big influence on the town. It is a place for young and old, the cost of living is reasonable, the job market is good, it's high tech and it's hip. Austinites tend to be very green (ecology minded). It is more liberal than anywhere else in Texas, which in itself is a dichotomy. The Hispanic culture enriches us and we embrace other cultures equally. I don't think true natives are the only ones to experience it. I think Austin draws you in and no other place in Texas compares. San Francisco, Boston, DC all have similar qualities, but they're expensive and they're not in Texas. Texans have a rebel spirit and believe themselves to be Texan before they are Americans - part of the legacy of Stephen Austin. It is truly a unique and beautiful city, but I don't think you have to have been born here to see it. You just have to have an open mind and love it -that and tolerate the traffic :-)

I am going to assume you are talking about Austin, TX. So I'll tell you that Austin has some of the most original and one of a kind personalities in the country. I don't remember the name of the show but it was like 20/20 or something, they did a very good story on the great capital of Texas. Myself, the landscape alone is enough to sell me on it. But if you want a place to live where you can truly be yourself, pick Austin.

I think it is the Drag Worms that make Austin truly Austin. It could also be the folks who think that it is still the same "cool college town" they went to in the early 70s and can't stand that it is the state capitol. It could be the stoplights on your major highways. I could go on, but you get my drift.

I think the essence of Austin is nicely summed up in the saying:

"Keep Austin Weird"
