An inquiring American wants to know

Everyone here in America LOVES British (or Irish) accents. I'm a girl, and to me, nothing is hotter in a guy than a nice British accent. Mmm. But British girls sound so precious and clever too! My question is, do you Brits like American accents? And can you tell the difference between, say, a Southern accent and a New York accent?

My friend has a job lined up in a paper factory. He's going thrugh the required immigration policies through th UK embassy. Are there any organizations set up to help him pay for his flight from Uganda to the UK? It costs approximately $500 U.S. dollars and I don't have that much money at the moment to spare. I'm searched online for a while and I haven't been able to find any organizations that will help out an individual.

..also what's the difference between a person who's "English" vs. "British"? I know it has to do with where a person is from, England, Ireland, etc. but it's unclear..

Back to my main question: WHY are some Brits so prejudice against Americans? (for example the British slang: "septic tank = Yank, an American.")
I've never been to England before but it seems like many Brits are very anti-American. Brits can't just lump us Americans all together like that. America is an incredibly diverse country and obviously everyone is going to be different and have their own opinions on matters, political or otherwise.
I've recently watched Green Street Hooligans (about English football fans and 'firms') and the characters are all extremely anti-American. Is this true to life or just exaggerated for film???

*****For humanities' sake I hope that there isn't this must unfounded prejudice in the world! *****

p.s. I've always loved British culture and literature...Rosie Rushton :) !

I'm going to the UK in July and wanted to know if there are any good hotels I should look at. I need a room with some space, and something fairly reasonable. It would be on a weekday, with 3 people in one room. Thanks!

That's not the reason I'm going that far by the way. My husband wants to go and pick up a car, but for me it's absolutely vital that there's an Ikea there just to keep me from moaning.

I'd appreciate any ideas for a family holiday - we are mid 30's and our children will be 4 (nearly 5), 3yrs and 3 months at the time. It will be last 2 weeks of August and the budget is £2k tops, preferably including food etc. Creche or nursery would be a bonus!

Thank you.

I hate all of these modern buildings that look as if they were hacked from a solid block of misery (although I do appreciate the work of the builders).

Why can't we go back to the gothic and Victorian arcgitecture of old; is it simply a question of money/ health and safety? I mean genuine workmanship in the woodwork, stone carving, glazing...why can't we just sod the modern era and political correctness once in a while and build something that's actually nice, and so grand that we could actually be proud to call it a public building?
