On 12 June 1964, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment, and sent to Robben Island.
The then Afrikaans government - in its typical foresighted fashion - believed that that was the end of it.
Wrong.
It had exactly the opposite effect. Mandela became their worst possible nightmare - a world renowned martyr - with him and his wife celebrated as peaceful freedom fighters. He has been compared to Ghandi
