Italy travel in august...
OK then.... it is very hot and full of tourists! if you like the beach go, because this is the best you can do in august!!
everything is open in Sardinia at this time! i suggest to go there, the beaches are beautiful and the air smells good and there are lots of fairs going on in some villages (with free food and wine) and this island have an old old story with old buildings (nuragen) to visit very good food and -if you go there, try the bread and Mirto and Amaretti sardi
gosh and a lot more....

trouble is, august is often the time when people are able to get away on vacation. it is hot (80's and 90's), although the really hot weather comes and goes. it is a little crowded, but not that crowded. crowds add to the spectacle anyway, especially in rome. while spring and fall are probably ideal, summer is okay too. i personally think the heat and crowds are overstated. we went for two weeks in july this year (supposedly the worst month) and it was fine. we visited rome, florence and venice (hotel at lido beach in venice), about four days in each place with a couple day trips tossed in. we flew into rome and out of venice, traveled between places by train, which i recommend.
italy is awesome. the answer is, go to italy whenever you get the opportunity. i almost forgot, nothing that important is closed in august because it is prime tourist season. whenever you go, have a great trip.

from what i have heard, august just isnt a great time to see italy. all the big touristy things will be open in the major cities, but not much is going on outside of those areas. the heat alone is enough to not go. try to plan another time so you can have better weather.

august is THE vacation month in italy, which means many things are closed, but in tourist aerea's everything will be opened, but also very crowdy...the temperature easily goes up to 40 degrees celcius, for example in sicily. however in coast aereas there's a lot to do...

That's major tourist season - I would push your trip to either April or late September.
If the heat doesn't get you the bugs - or annoying tourists - will!
September has cheaper hotel rates also since it isn't tourist season.
