I thought so, but for this awnser I was given a thumbs down. In fact 5 other people chose Communism Peak as the BA. The person was using an outdated atlas.

Not only is that no longer the correct name, but it's in the independent nation-state of Tajikistan. Why do so many people continue to confuse the Russian Federation with the old USSR?

Just a couple of months ago sombody I met was shocked to learn that Russians do indeed celebrate Christmas or that they can worship in the Russian Orthodox faith (other faiths as well). Again old Soviet attitudes and a poor understanding of modern current events.

He opened up the country to the rest of the world. People no longer had to limit their criticism to hushed words said at the kitchen table. He introduced economic reform so people could start their own businesses. Understanding that vodka and productivity hardly go hand in hand, he even tried to combat alcoholism by restricting its sale.

So what did he do wrong? Why did the Soviet economy collapse when reforms were introduced -- but "communist" China's reforming economy is growing?

This question should probably go under History, but I am more interested in hearing opinions of people who come from or have a deep understanding of former Soviet countries. Best answer to the most convincing argument.

Im from Australia and I helped out a Russian from Moscow while I was over there, and now he wants to repay me the money he owes. It's not too much, 10,000 roubles (about AU$500).

However I don't know how he can transfer the money to me (I'm in Sydney).

I don't want to use Western Union as I don't want him to know my full name (he turned out to be a bit creepy / stalkerish, but was nice when I lent him the money). I certainly don't want to give him my bank account details or home address.

Is there any other way?

Thanks, Tracy.
