1) Turkey wants to be part of the EU but hasn't stated why: Being part of the EU would subject Turkey to more regulation and increased competition from member states.
2) 36% of Turks scratch a meagre living off the land....if Turkey joined up, many of them have their bags packed already and would head off for Germany to work as janitors there.
3) Turkey spends a small fortune, becoming increasingly indebted, in maintainign NATO's second largest armed forces. Is this right? wouldn't Turkey be best served spending money raising living standards instead. For a country blessed with natural resources, Turkey is an economic failure when compared to prosperous Greece which has only limestone as a resource.
4) Turks are ultra-nationalistic , yet their country is basically an American protectorate , dependant on US and Israeli military aid and technology.
5) Turkey insists on being secular to the point that it undermines its claim to be a democracy that upholds human rights.
