No they don't look at you because they hate you but because Turkish people are curious as Irmak said.
Although I'm a Turk, I get looks too just like everybody here. We like to stare at people. Some do it in a very disturbing way.

You can make a very practical test in order to understand whether it is your "Americanness" (?) that attracts attention. Without speaking English or having an enormous American flag on your t-shirt wander around in places where Turks are present. See if they still look at you.
But that test is for you; I can surely tell you that none of the Turks care about Americans, I mean in a good way they don't care. Thus it isn't possible for us to hate you. Stop being so paranoid. If you 've noticed that they haven't eaten their lunch while staring at you, that means you were staring at them as well.
Also just because someone stares at you, doesn't mean that they hate you. I guess you aren't a very experienced person in social aspects since you are unable to tell whether someone is glancing in a hostile or friendly way. I just think it's weird that you ask this and from your wording of the question one can easily assume that Turks are some kind of aliens from a far away planet.

I lived in Turkey for 8 years. Turks don't hate Americans, some might I guess, but not in general. Turks are curious as someone said earlier and although they might stare it might not be because of any negative reason, they might not even realize that you are American. They just look. I stopped paying attention to it. And besides, it is more the way the random people you cross on the street would act and not the behavior of normal educated people of the country.
If anyone hates you for your nationality, whatever it is, ignore them.

do Americans hate Iraq people?
it was a question like this.
I know, some of Americans don't want American army in Iraq and stop the killings.
therefore, I can not say that all American people are so cruel. I know lots of good people there.
Turkish people, have a reaction for Iraq occupation and American politicians two-side play. That is it...
Have you ever try to do empathy?

That must be a different planet. There are many Americans working and living here, and they are all quite comfortable.
The experience you described must be arising from different circumstances. Turks staring at Americans and "hating" Germans obviously has more to do with their social conditions in Germany than American international politics.

hi id like to give an outsiders prospective
im irish and i spend a whole lot of time in turkey and have done for many years
yes turkish people do look at you, although i find it like answerer 1 said just curious, and its very honest in comparison to people who try too do it unnoticed in countries like our own. it can be a compliment and it doesnt bother me at all. The other answerers are right in saying that they dont hate you, just your politics and i have to say they are not alone in that, american government in recent years have made some very controversial decisions and i would be one of the first to doubt their ethics on many subjects.Turkey is a lovely place to visit, maybe you should, and i think you will find some of the nicest people you have ever met and like myself find them completely non-judgemental when it comes to one on one interactions

Turkish people are a lil bit curious unfortunately =)
I don't hate American people, I hate American politics; as a Turk.Because I know that I can't blame or hate a group of people because of their country's politics. And I'm sure that all Turkish people don't hate Americans.
PS to Ana: We don't have any problems with entire world.People relationships are different, political problems are different for us.

well we are very warm blooded people. i get this kind of looks anytime. they can even tell you what they think of you when they pass by. but this is just kind of compliment (of course not staring). you might seem exotic to them or maybe they just find you interesting. i never hated Americans, only American that i truly hate is George w. bush (no insult). we are all individuals, i cannot hate you if i don't know you...
