Martial Arts

[Selected]: All categories Sports Martial Arts

I am looking on starting a martial art for two main purposes - to lose a little bit of weight (at absolute most 10-15 lbs) and get in shape and to learn practical self-defense. Because of my location, the only styles that would be within a reasonable distance are the typical cookie-cutter kenpo and taekwondo schools. I've done a TON of research, and perhaps this is a faulty conclusion, but I feel like either style I will be sacrificing one of my goals. I've heard that taekwondo is excellent for fitness but not practical for real-life scenarios, and I went to a local kenpo school to look in on a class and it was not really all that much of a workout, though the instructor seemed really really good. Are my conclusions faulty? Am I just naive? I don't want to sacrifice either of my goals, and I really DO need to learn some self-defense. Insights, anyone? And forgive me for another "which one should I study" questions. I know it must irritate y'all. :O)

I personally like Mix Martial Art (UFC, Pride, Bushido) things of that nature over Boxing. MMA in my opinion are much more exciting to watch and crazier. Although boxing is a real crazy sport too MMA has more action and variety of skills involve. Boxing can be fun, but in recent years it is dying. Unlike MMA, boxing is too Hollywod. However, MMA can one day be Hollywood too, just not now. So, Boxing or MMA, which one is more appealing and why is it apeapling to you?

Consider that someone being bullied learns boxing to get confidence, but if faced with the same tormentors, they would still be the same person inside, so despite having the skills, they could lack the confidence to use them.
But, someone with no training could kick butt because they have the confidence to do so.
What makes a good fighter? Good training or inner spirit?

Everyday I see several questions asking about which martial art is better than the next or which is better for actual combat. I don't get it. I have been actively studying martial arts for 32 years and have seen just about every major style there is. The simple truth is that each art form has something unique to offer and whether or not it is effective in actual combat has more to do with the individual than the art form. It's not always what you know, but your ability to use what you know. So what point is there in asking the question which is better ?

How long does it take on average to go from a complete beginner to being reasonably adept at Tae Kwon Do? I know everyone different but i have excellent co-ordination, good fitness and learn most things quickly. How much does it cost per hour? What exactly do you have to do to progress through the ranks? I know you take tests but how are they marked and what do you do in them exactly?

Thank you for your time

External includes: Karate, Taekwondo, Most types of Kung Fu (Praying Mantis etc), Capoeira, Tang Soo Do, Krav Maga, Kickboxing etc. (Fastmovements)

Internal includes: Judo, Jujutsu, Aikido, Tai Chi Chu'an, Hapkido (Slow movements)

I personally favour external arts as I feel they are more realistic in a fight, but what do you think?

I have a bet for all the women. I'm tired of movies and TV shows where men are defeated by women attacking their balls. I think that's B.S. Never been hit there, but I know my balls can resist any kind of attack from a woman. I stand in front of you with my legs apart. You can kick, knee, punch or squeeze my balls. You have five attacks. If I'm still standing after them I give you U$S 500. What you think you could do to me? Only women answer this question, please. Men, I’m not interested in your opinion.
