Weights and exercise are the most effective and cost the least. These other supplements just add weight, only the actual exercise builds the muscle.

The best supplement you can take is whey protien. It is fairly cost effective, easy to mix, and helps you hit your meal/calorie quota easier. Whey protien also is the most biologically efficient food you can intake. Unlike other forms of protien, whey mixes easily in a shaker cup and doesn't require a blender.

Other than protien, glutamine is great. It's an amino acid that your body can utilize and is considered the #1 non-food supplement. Creatine is also good, but you need to be careful taking it. Taking it improperly can leave you dehydrated and end up giving you a bit of muscle cramping.

No supplement is truelly effective. That's why their called supplements. They are they to assist with a sound nutrition plan and sound workout plan. Good plans for your goals are the most effective ways to go about bodybuilding.

A supplement may help get the last rep. Or loose the last .5% of body fat, but it will not boost your your max 20 lbs or take your from 10% BF to 8% BF

A healthy, balanced diet, light but numerous meals (get rid of the 3 meals a day concept and have 5 or 6 very light meals that are balanced and protien enriched), get lots of sleep (that's when your muscles heal and thus "build") and mix light and heavy reps with your weights under the guidance of a pro.

Never lift too much! Push yourself, use a spotter, but this is a long-term process. If you rush it you will hurt yourself and just delay your progress even longer.

Don't rely on protien powders or any of that malarky. Your genetics are going to determine your body type and how big you can get. Your determination and hard work will determine how far you get within that potential.
