My my....

I think you mean properly, Daito. A combination of two words, Dai meaning large, and To meaning blade. Simple as pie.

A katana is a peacetime era sword, i.e. post-unification (Ieyasu Tokugawa era), and a Daito would be a wartime blade, during the time of civil wars and previous.

A "dai-katana" would be a Daito, and in turn, not a Katana at all.

The term "dai", means great or large.

During the Samurai period in Japan, Samurai were privileged to wear two swords (daisho). Of the two swords, one sword was long; the other short. The long sword (daito - katana) was more than 24 inches. The short sword (shoto - wakizashi) was between 12 and 24 inches.

Hope that this helps.

::: shakes head ::: all a dai-katana is is a larger version of a katana that can only be wielded correctly with two hands. Usually about 8 to 12 inches longer than a standard katana.

I am not sure something is called daikatana in real life. However, there was a video game called daikatana!!!! It made created by Ion Storm... and was release around 1999-2000. It was on the PC... and I think the Nintendo 64???

in the game.... daikatana was a specially forged Japanese sword which could like alter the fabric of time and space.

So in reality.... if there is something called daikatana... it obviously doesnt do what it does in the video game....

If it does exsist... it is probably a special type of sumarai sword... which may cost A LOT of money!!!

I think it was just part of a game... but I am sure someone will respond with a 'samarai' knowledge?

Hope this helps!!!
