Each martial art was designed to be used in a real life or death situation. If your looking for a street brawl then look into a mixed martial arts program. If you are interested in subduing not maiming then look into a school that focuses on joint locks and such. I have taken many martial arts including Wado-Ryu karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Kendo. For an all round traditional martial arts style I would suggest Wado-ryu because it focuses on strikes as well as takes elements from joint locking martial arts schools. If your more into flashy kicks and such go the tae kwon do route, or if you want to play with bamboo swords and beat the living fluff out of friends do Kendo....ok now I am rambling.

Knowing any martial art in a life or death struggle would give you an above average chance of coming out of the situation alive. If your fighting another person with similar knowledge then it would come down to physical abilities and skill. There is no best martial arts for a life and death struggle. The best martial artist though would never get themselves involved in a life and death situation.

Old Chinese saying: To never get involved in a fight is to never know defeat.

You could win 100 fights but lose 1 and your still a loser, true masters avoid fights so that they don't have to use their abilities to hurt anyone.

After traing for more that 30 years in the Arts. No one martial art can train you for any situation. As I progressed in the Art I started with I learned how much out there I did not know. I had a good instructor who sent me to learn other styles, I went to plenty other seminars. I feel a good rounded martial artist that has trained in multiple sytles would be better to handle a street situation. That also includes deception. You don't stand up there and tell them I am a black belt and you better leave me alone. I saw a black belt woman friend of mine in a bar look like she was gonna break down and cry when accosted by a larger man. Boy was I fooled, appearing weak she lured him in and blasted him.
Thats what you would have to do with an agressive, tough street fighter.
Hope this helps

SHIDOKAN Karate = sometimes described as the triathlon of Martial Arts, as it encompasses knockdown (otherwise known as bare knuckle) karate, Muay Thai, and grappling.(wikipedia)

whatever good mma school you have in the area will still tell you in self defense to strike vulnerable places, eye gauge, even monkey bite a jugular if you have too. main thing is you will be in shape to never give up. also i'd check out the web site comegetyousome.com as there are clips of street fights, brutal attacks, people getting jumped by multiple assailents(sp?), stabbings etc... with commentary on the clips by a martial artist who kind of points out flaws people usually make when fighting off instinct.
i'd read bruce lee philosophy
and apply the old anecdote to combative situations; If you were walking in an alley and two shading figures approach you, you'd proly clam. but if you saw the same two jumping your mother it would be a different story right?
hope you never have to fight unless its 4 sport,
peace bud
p.s. i know nuthing about weapons training but i hear krav maga and philipino stick/knife fightings da bomb Danny Inosanto baby

I don't believe you can choose any one martial art as the best, or most useful, because with the proper training anyone could be the best.
In order to give you an answer, I would lean towards Jujitsu! The elite military us groups start with a base of Jujitsu, and add to it with special training in weapons etc.

for defending yourself on the streets or in a public area the best self defense system (not neccessarily martial art) is krav maga: http://www.kravmaga.com/krav01.html......
there are also dvd available that are comprehensive and easy to use: http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs...

Krav Maga is the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians
in the United States. Krav Maga is a simple, effective self
defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios.

for instance... someone grabs you by the throat... where do your hands instinctively go? to the area of danger, right.. they go to the throat..

so in krav maga, you use that instinctive response and turn it into a defensive movement.. you use that as a pluck, you pluck the hands away slightly to combat the initial danger of being choked out..

simultainiously you knee strike to the groin (a person has their hands at your throat they will be in a squared stance, primed for a shot to the groin)..

two shots to the groin, followed by multiple strikes to the face, the person will be too injured to continue the assault, giving you a chance to retreat...

honestly i think if you are looking for self defense this is the best system for that, which includes basic defense, defense against a gun and defense against a knife. it's all about defending and escaping..

hope this helps!

It depends on you, not every martail arts is right for everyone, no one size fits all styles out there. It also depends what you are looking for in a martial arts program. If you go to a school and are not happy you will not keep going.

If you're looking for something practical and effective- Krav Maga is useful- the official martial arts of the Israeli Armed Forces- kind of tough to find, but effective.

The only effective martial art is the one you are trained in. There is no such thing as "the most useful" because they ALL are. Everything comes down to how well you are trained and how well you use your training. There is no single best style for any situation.
