My vote goes for France 1998. They had only one decent game in the whole tornament, and that was the final.
Other contenders would be Italy 2006 and England 1966.
Italy 2006 did not have any really good players, but, in my opinion, they deserve some credit for winning away from home. England 1966 is mentioned because they needed a cheated goal to win, but they did have some good players.
What do you think?

there are no regular breaks in the action other than halftime in soccer, unlike other media-friendly sports such as football, basketball, baseball, etc. Despite many people getting fired up about the world cup, I don't ever see soccer as currently played to be viable here due to the fact it is not well suited for constant commercial interuption. And without the TV, well. . .
I think this might be the reason why it hasn't caught on here, more so than the fact that it's "too slow" and low scoring--the explanation I've often heard. Does this make sense?

Materazzi is suspended for 5 games, and he have to pay a fine of 5000$ (euro)

Zidane is not suspended on any games, because hes about to retire, and he have to pay a fine of 3104$ (euro)

Any comments?

Materazzi: WORDS -- 5000 CHF fine -- 2 game suspension
Zidane: ACTIONS -- 7500 CHF fine - 3 game suspension

You decide.

Opens up a whole can of worms.
So lets say in the next world cup, your team is winning its first game of the tournament. In the last moments of the game, you substitute an unlikely never to be used reserve player to go head butt a superstar on purpose. Your player claims he was provoked. You loose a reserve player, and the other team looses a superstar.
Sounds like a new stategy that will unfold in international soccer.
Pretty soon the players will complain because another player looked at him the wrong way!!!
I think the Fifa officials had their heads up their butts when they came up with this verdict!!!

Pirlo was instrumental for Italy in this world cup. He was all around the field and feeded some neat passes to others who converted them into goals. His set-pieces were as brilliant as those of Becksy's and Ronaldinihio's. I really thought he deserved the Golden Ball over others but it was really sad that such a fabulous player missed out on it. If I am not wrong, I don't remember seeing him committing any fouls on others.
