there are no regular breaks in the action other than halftime in soccer, unlike other media-friendly sports such as football, basketball, baseball, etc. Despite many people getting fired up about the world cup, I don't ever see soccer as currently played to be viable here due to the fact it is not well suited for constant commercial interuption. And without the TV, well. . .
I think this might be the reason why it hasn't caught on here, more so than the fact that it's "too slow" and low scoring--the explanation I've often heard. Does this make sense?

Come on who in the world loves commercials breaks get real...I mean you are watching the game, last play few seconds left...then all of the sudden you see a commercial about a girl going horseriding, saying, "sometimes I have that not so fresh feeling...."

No your statement does not make sense. The fact it hasn't really caught on has nothing to do with advertising. I assure you that most TV viewers would prefer that there was less adverising in other sports.
IMO one of the reasons why it hasn't caught on yet is because people don't understand the game. All they know is that you get a point when the ball goes in the net. People argue that there's not enough scoring but I believe that's a common misconception. Many die hard baseball fans welcome a 1-0 pitching duel because they appreciate what's happening on the mound. You can have an amazing and exciting soccer game without any scoring if you understand and appreciate what's happening just like the 1-0 pitching duel.
Having said all that US soccer has made great strides in the past 15 years. We have some key players playing in top leagues in Europe and our national team has shown some progress in International play. Coaching is slowly improving through the youth level which is building a stronger foundation for years to come.

Yes. College and pro football also have "made for tv" time outs, just for tv to show commercials.
It is a vicious circle: Sports depend on advertising and television to get to the people. But, if people aren't interested, then neither are advertisers or tv, without which the sport can't thrive.
Americans are not generally into sports that last for hours and can end in a 0-0 tie. That is why the NHL changed their rules this year so that NO game can end in a tie. It was a smart decision.

no, i keep reading where soccer fans say this but it doesn't hold water for one reason. NASCAR. what about NASCAR? there are no regular breaks in NASCAR either, but it works great on TV. it's the second highest rated sport in america behind the NFL and they don't even have a halftime, they just go to commercial whenever, hopefully under caution, but sometimes under green. so if the networks wanted to show soccer they would show it, the fact that there are no regular breaks has nothing to do with it.

Simple, in modern 'Soccer' (Football), the WORLD game advertising is a viable option becuase it is displayed to such a massive audience.
Revenue is raised from rotating banners that line the pitch and massive amounts paid for advertising at half time.
The banners on the actual pitch though, reap massive rewards.

Have sponsors for every 15 minutes of the game listed next to the score board. More prominent ads around the field and on the boards.
I don't know, THEY should be thinking of something real hard cause we are talking about a potentially huge market and THEY will be making all the money-not us!!!!

think of it this way..the rest of the world besides usa live off of soccer, do you think they want commericals?
soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and it didn't become so by having commericals.
