I want to lose weight by bike riding, I'm female - but I'm scared of gaining big thighs - will riding a bike bulk it up like crazy?

Is it better to shift down to the smallest cog using the large chain main before shifting to the smaller chain main or is it better to first shift to the small and then shift to the smaller gogs?

I found this link mention the Townie will cause knee damage. Can anyone shed some light on this knee issue? Does the new Townie design stress the knee in a way that will cause unresonable risk of injury?

P.S. - I am just using it for beach riding. Flat, no hills...

Thanks in advance.

Over the last 2 months I've developed tennis elbow from cycling on my hybrid bicycle (Diamondback Maravista). I've had a "professional" look at me on my bike on a trainer and he installed an extension tube on my front fork, but that's not helping.
For some reason it's only on my LEFT elbow. I don't think I'm overcompensating, but I broke my right arm broke the ulna where it meets the elbow) about 3 months ago, and started cycling seriously when I recovered from it (I got the docs ok to ride). I'm not tensing (death grip on the handlebars), elbows are bent, and my shoulders are forward. My handlebars are almost flat (just a slight rise), and I have bar ends. I'm willing to do whatever's necessary, as I'm in the middle of trying to get in shape and I love cycling. Picture of bike can be seen on Diamondback.com or

I tried it once and it freaked me out I couldn't get off a bike while going downhill on a pretty technical trail. Anybody feel the same way? Are platform pedals better?

I'd like to get a good mountian bike. Could be used. Something for trails, but something I could use on the road as well. Not going to do any real rough riding. $200 - $300 range.

I've looked on the internet and oddly can't find this out. I'm not a bike person myself, but I'd like to get one for my boyfriend for Christmas. Can anyone tell me what size a 6' 4" man would need?It would be for basic around-town and flat trail riding.

If you happen to have a recommmendation for a particular bike, that would be great - needs to be sturdy, doesn't need a lot of bells & whistles.

i have a schwinn S40 mtb that i am painting. i already painted the main triangle semi-gloss black. what color do you think i should paint the swing arm, if at all? i was thinking sumthin like OD green...or should i just leave it gloss red? idk if the gloss and semi-gloss go together.

i have included a link for a pic of my bike. dont start dissing, my bike does not have those parts. i have upgraded everything except the frame. (marzocchi, fox suspension, mavic rims, deore shifters, Hayes HFX mag hydro brakes, u get the idea..the only thing stock is the frame.) i dont want a bunch of people saying "ur an idiot for putting a ton of money into crap like that". sorry, i coodnt afford a kick *** bike a year ago so i made many upgrade to this one.

anyway, just tell me what you think will look good. i also will be putting "Specialized S-Works" decals on it. yes, i no what ur gonna think about it, but thats just my humor.

can u think of a good name for this bike? Specialized _________

Why do custom frames usually cost so much in Canada and America?

The wait for a custom frame is also terribly long as well, sometimes from 6 months up to a year lead time is required.
