What was the dream about? What did He say to you?

The purpose Y!As serves is not as it was intended to be. Many are here to harass others (in R&S especially), many are here to have their beliefs confirmed (especially evolutionists), and many are here for fun. The real nature of this forum has been so prevalent that most now believe that it is as intended. Others may disagree, but I believe that it was intended to answer people's questions. Many need support of some kind, many need advice, many need practical solutions, but in reality those who seek such answers are the minority, though most need such answers. For me, now, it serves 2 purposes: (1) for practical issues, and (2) it is an exercise in self-discipline. For my most recent Qs I have not read the As. This is because I need to learn to care less what people think. That is my primary purpose. If I am booted off for this, that’s fine, because that means that it has very little purpose for me. I can get practical answers elsewhere. I will not likely see the answers to this Q.

The Bible was written by men, not god. How do you know that the translation from the original text to English was correct? How do you know that there aren't pieces of the Bible left out to keep certain details from public knowledge? How do you know which "version" is correct, the KJV or the NIV? How can any of them be correct when they are just a "version" of the original? Doesn't that mean that someone changed things a little to produce what they considered to be "correct"?

Please do me a favor and answer using your own words and not quoting some scripture that a "man" wrote.

Now, I understand that, in a lot of faiths, the holy book is the foundation for everything the people believe; so I can understand quoting one, two, or a few verses to back up a point made (in your own words).

But what I don't get is when I or someone else asks a question and people just copy and paste verses from their favorite online sources and that's their answer--nothing in their own words, just the scriptures. Sometimes they'll quote almost a whole page worth of texts, half of which usually having little if anything to do with the point of the question. I guess I just don't see a point in that, unless they just want an easy way to earn two points.

All of these Oh hey your religon is stupid, no yours is stupid, no your, no yours. Man!!! SHUT UP!!! Look, how about this, just believe in whatever it is you believe in and shut up about it. If people would stop preaching that their religon is the best and this and that all of the other crap would just disappear. Just believe what you believe and go on about your business. No one cares what anyone else believes in anyways. Do you honestly think that if you start talking about oh my religon this and my religon that, that anyone is going to care? No one cares. So, just do your thing, believe in whatever or whoever you believe in and leave the rest of us alone to believe in whatever we believe in.

I need to know for a school newspaper article. I can't exactly give you what I"m going for in this article. I'm trying to find the history of the gonstic gospels but all I get is da vinci code junk! I know that my history teacher said that at the council of nicea met and tried to make a world wide doctrine for the belives of christianity and that they were trying to unite all the countries togather through religon. my teacher also said the the gnostic gospels were parts of the original bible that got edited out while making the doctrine. my history teacher is very smart and all but I need better resources than that! so if anyone knows of a book or a website that can give actuall facts conneting the council of nicea and the gnostic gospels so I can get all of the history to the gnostic gospels I would really really appreciate and want it the info please! so please send me what you know I'd really rather have nothing to do with the da vinci code if possible. and I need a valuble resource

thank you in advance for informative, thoughtful answers, and not religion- or science- bashing.

i know the subject of evolution can be touchy, and i have some LDS co-workers i've been talking to lately. i'm also doing research in the field of anthropology (evolution and human nature stuff). i don't want to go off on how i believe evolution can explain nearly all aspects of human behavior around them if they don't believe in the theory.

So can anyone tell me what your church's official stance on evolution is? What is ok? Evolution of humans from a single-celled organism? Evolution of non-human animals? Sexual selection? Natural selection? Genetic mutations? Genetics in general?

I have heard from some mormons that evolution is against their religion but maybe i just met some contentious ones.

Has the media church given Christians a bad name? Why is it that in the bible all sins are equal but homosexuality is seen as unforgivable, why have people come to hate all gays and lesbians, when the greatest commandment is to love your neighbor. Do you think that the fundamentalist Christians are giving Christianity a bad image by proclaiming to the world that all gays are going to hell.

Somalia Town Threatens to Behead People Who Don't Pray 5 Times Daily

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Residents of a southern Somalia town who do not pray five times a day will be beheaded, an official said Wednesday, adding the edict will be implemented in three days.

Shops, tea houses and other public places in Bulo Burto, about 124 miles northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, should be closed during prayer time and no one should be on the streets, said Sheik Hussein Barre Rage, the chairman of the town's Islamic court. His court is part of a network backed by armed militiamen that has taken control of much of southern Somalia in recent months, bringing a strict interpretation of Islam that is alien to many Somalis.

Those who do not follow the prayer edict after three days have elapsed, "will definitely be beheaded according to Islamic law," Rage told The Associated Press by phone.
