Actually none of the gnostics have been proven forgeries. There are several books that talk about these gospels and several theories that goes along with them.

Holy Blood Holy Grail
The girl and the alabaster Jar
The Templar revelation
The sword and the grail

Are just a few.

This is part of what I have been studying for the last 5 years. Although the Council of Nicea and the Gnostics never seem to officially cross paths it is speculated that they were considered by the council. The Council had hundreds if not thousands of writings to consider.

The Gnostics were a more freer way of worship and it took a lot of power away from the church and put it with the individual. Something that the church was not real big on. The gnostics were also high on praise for women. Something else the church was not real fond of.

The problem with the gnostics is that they are not whole. Christians choose to debunk the scriptures by this fact and the fact that they were not part of the bible. They forget (or have no clue) that the bible was put together by MEN. It should also be noted that these men were the high men of the churches which were also known as being quite corrupt.

The council of nicea actually did not determine which books were canonical and which were not. this is a very common misconception. if you search council of nicea on wikipedia it will tell you more about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Council_of_Nicaea

Here was their agenda:
The Arian question;
The celebration of Passover;
The Meletian schism;
The Father and Son one in purpose or in person;
The baptism of heretics;
The status of the lapsed in the persecution under Licinius.

Also if you do some research you will find that the Gnostic Gospels were determined to be noncanonical (they were never part of the Bible) by the Church Fathers and Theologians at that time because their teachings were radically different than the rest of the Bible and they were written much later--not by any of the apostles or followers of the apostles. Many claimed to be authored by the followers of Jesus (Mary, Judas, Thomas, etc.) but were obvious forgeries to convince people of their authenticity.

Go to your local library or bookstore and pick up a copy of the Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels. The Gnostic Gospels are not in the Bible because the Council of Nicea chose to keep them out of the Bible. Here are links for you:
