Now, I understand that, in a lot of faiths, the holy book is the foundation for everything the people believe; so I can understand quoting one, two, or a few verses to back up a point made (in your own words).
But what I don't get is when I or someone else asks a question and people just copy and paste verses from their favorite online sources and that's their answer--nothing in their own words, just the scriptures. Sometimes they'll quote almost a whole page worth of texts, half of which usually having little if anything to do with the point of the question. I guess I just don't see a point in that, unless they just want an easy way to earn two points.

I'm a Christian, and I've read the Bible many times. But I only very rarely refer to a particular Bible passage on YA. I will if there's a valid point...or of I'm talking to other Christians, but if I'm talking to those outside my faith... then scripture will have little or no influence in their minds.
And I certainly agree that too many Christians quote scripture as a way to avoid introspection and active examination of life. Many Christians simply parrot what they're taught instead of seeking any understanding around what they think or believe.
And that's hardly an example that most non-believers would want to emulate or adopt into their own lives.
Reason is not the enemy of faith.

To answer my own life's questions I go to the bible, it is God's Holy Word. Why not use it to answer questions in the R & S catagory?
I don't copy and paste from online sources. (with the exception of web addresses). I have my bible & concordance right here to look stuff up.
You do make a valid point. It is good to have an answer that fits the question. & It is good to have that person's view along with the scripture quote.
(a little note to Ponderer of the Enigma-I wasn't force fed this all my life.I was curious about prophecy and started studying the bible for myself about as an adult about 16 years ago. Through my years of study the bible has proved itself to be true 100% -So ponder no more - study end time prophecy in the bible - no enigma there)

God's Word when spoken or written down to read by others will never come back void. Though it may not have a personal effect on you, it has an effect on someone. And why should I answer a question about God or the bible with my own words? I cannot speak for God. The bible has the answers.

I believe it is because some Christian, who are not particularly well prepared to debate, assume that the meaning of a given verse or passage is clear to everyone, when to non-believers many such things seem ridiculous or just don't seem to relate to the subject.

Yes , quoting the bible to an atheist is a bit silly. May as well quote from Harry Potter.

that could be it... the easy two points thing. If you want someone to take you seriously about your religion you better be able to use some of your own words. so i agree with you a guess...
yay for 2 points...
and for giving a half intelligent answer... i hope....

Because most are not smart enough to come up with an answer formed by logic, so they must depend on some crappola fairy tale that they've been force fed all their lives.

Because it is the word of God- I would definately trust God's word over man's. That is why I always post scripture- back up everything that has to do with the truth, with God's word- that way I know I am not saying something out of my own opinion that may not line up with scripture, but rather show people that it is GOD who is saying this- which is MUCH more important than what man thinks.
