I have heard chapter and verse used to justify almost everything. From torture and murder, to the editing of t-shirts. A quick skim and I see the potential for arguements backing up genocide (from the story of Joshua) and the subjugation of women into property (pretty much the whole old testament). I -know- that these are not -valid- arguments, but the words are there. Are there any points of view that the bible -can't- be used to back up?

I want to know if the events, especially, the miracles of Christ, found in the four Gospels, were personnally witnessed by the authors of the books of the Bible. Stated another way, were the authors of the books of the Gospels eyewitnesses or were the authors repeating stories heard from others?

i have herd many many things, and i am currently waiting to hear back from my grndfather abou tthe freemasons. i have heard that they are nothing but a "helping hand" so to speak that they just help others in need, and help eachother. i heard things about cults and the higher up worshiping the devil. i have also heard that they do not follow any religion, as well as they are a religion. i have been told that they are based on a "secret" whatever that may be. i have heard that they have a part in major religions and other cults, such as catholics and the LDS (mormons). i also heard that their teachings are by mouth only so things can change and that they teach things condradicting to the bible. i am not bashing and not condoning. i am simply asking cause im not real sure what to believe. i do believe there are cults that claim to be religious to save their name, and there are some organizations that are not cults but everyone seems to think they are... so help me out a bit here?

While i'm not a Jehovas Witness they occasionally bring material to my home and I am polite and take it. Normally I dont read it but I did today because the title caught my eye and it was about false religions. Now one section in particular really made me wonder. Because it says: Most religions teach that the soul or spirit is some invisible part of a human that survives the death of the physical body. However, the Bible teaches a different doctrine. Ezekial 18:4 "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all." (Ecclesiastes 9:5) Jesus taught that the dead will be resurrected. Then it asks if my religion teaches that the soul will not die? Now I am confused because I have always assumed..not necessarily been taught...that when you die your soul goes on. Which is right? I am asking this question of those that believe in, and know the Bible.

I know there are plenty of Young Earth Creationist's out there (earth is 6,000 years old or less). When you look at those amazing pics from the Hubble and the explanation of some huge galaxy that has been colliding with another for 300 million years or something, do you think the scientists are deluded?
Example: http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/archive/releases/2006/46/

Do you think the galaxy is even as far away as they claim? (541 million light years away or so). Do you think it's closer? I'm honestly curious

We got the theory of Evolution and then theres god. I can say god is wrong because the earth is 4 or 5 billion years old, genesis 1 & 2 are different from each other. and the earth was created in 7 days including humans, but how can there be a gap of 62 million years between humans and dinosaurs? And evolution states we came from monkeys which makes a hell of a lot more sense than god, but then if we evolved from monkeys then why do monkeys not evolve into humans anymore. Im not a sci-fi geek or anything just a very curious person. i believe that aliens have created us (adam and eve) and been testing to see how long we can live adn how advanced we could become. If you think about it there have been "UFO" sightings but no alien visits, except the whackos who have had "implants" or so they claim. but anyways what if they dont want to destroy us they are just overlooking us and "checking in" every once in a while. We humans believe in god because we r told 2, most ppl cldnt hndle the tru

"For by grace (undeserved favor) through faith(1) and that not of youself it is the gift of God not of works lest anyone should boast."
in other words if you could be good enough to go to heaven -never do one sin-then you could brag and say Jesus died for nothing im earning my way to heaven-- and (1)(Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God Romans 11vs17)

my boyfriend's sister invited me to her daughter's Christening at the end of the month. I am from a non-religious family so I've never been to one. I know what they're all about and all of that good stuff but I wanted to know, are christening gifts expected? Its not a big deal if they are but if they aren't, I dont want to be the only one bringing a gift! If they are, what do you recommend? The baby is only a few months old. Thank you!!

1. If you say no, then shouldn't it be banned from school along with their Creed of Creation? The State should not promote any form of religion. Correct?

2. If you say yes, then should they not voluntarily ban themselves from this section. This is called "religion and spirituality" , after all?

The 17th century mathmetician and philosopher said to his friends, "If I believe in God and life after death and you do not, and if there is a God, we both lose when we die. However, if there is a God, you still lose and I gain everything." -Blaise Pascal.

I'm curious about everyone's opinion on this. Politeness is appreciated. Thank you.

How very sad this question is...
It is sad to see a religion that teaches love (love thy neighbor) and tolerance (judge not lest ye be judged) abused in such a way. Why do people misinterpret the teachings of Jesus, when did he ever act like this?

Does anyone find this to be very pitiful?

This is the religion and spirituality section........oh sorry, it is probably because people like me ask questions directed to them in this section......and oh, you don't have to believe in god to be spiritual.
