I'm not asking this question from a racist point of view (I am mixed race myself), but just curiosity. I'm in lower Tribeca and on Chambers Street in NYC a lot and I can't figure out why Chambers Street is so full of black people. You would think it is a black neighborhood but I know that mostly white people live there. It is not an exciting area near City Hall. Besides the community college, some dollar stores, a McDonald's, and a wig shop that caters to black women, I really don't see what could possibly attract so many blacks to that street. I know lots come in from Harlem and Brooklyn to shop at Century 21 but why are they hanging out a few blocks north on Chambers? Most of the blacks I see are dressed very ghetto (very few in suits or professional clothing). The low-income housing projects are over by Water Street, not near Chambers. The restaurants, apartments, and boutiques in the area are expensive, so why are so many blacks hanging out on Chambers at all hours?
