What happens to regular human civic courtesy when they are on the freeway?

We see each other as moving objects, not human beings. We can't really see each other, so the "human" aspect to our behavior falls by the wayside. But notice how when you make eye contact with someone in traffic, they always do something courteous, like let you merge.
