Tuskeegee Institute was created as an act of the legislature of Alabama to educate African Americans to fulfill the mission of teaching other African Americans for self-sufficiency.

Students were educated to become teachers for regular education, which had been by and large denied to slaves and their descendants, and to help the freedmen and their families to learn modern methods of agricultural. The goal was to increase the opportunities of African-Americans to become self-sufficient and successful.

Economic independence became the main thrust of the school.

If I am correct, it was one of the first colleges for African Americans.
It also become an acclaimed and respected medical school.
