Well I took beginners french for about 6 years when in a private elementary school and I have not spoken or heard it spoken since. I am now trying to pick up from where I was and go even farther. My husband wants to learn it with me. He does not have regular access to a computer and there is no way that we can pick up and relocate to France. Also, we cannot enroll in a class at this time. So, I went to BarnesnNoble to buy a book/textbook that would include a cd-rom but there are so many different ones. I need something that would include vocabulary and grammar - not just something for a traveler. Please if you know of a good book/audio let us know. Also, what has worked for you? ....thanks!

And also:

Or:

Thanks.

Would somebody translate this quote to Latin, please?
Thank you so much. Also, would you please provide explanatory notes on why you translate it the way you do, or explain the Latin syntax of the literal translation? Thanks. 11 points to the most thorough answer.

"The shallow observer will jump to shallow conclusions, thus breeding ingnorance, but the intelligent will seek out the profound"

This is a purely playful question. After teaching myself some Latin, I've come to the conclusion that it's a language on steroids! But then the thought ocurred to me, "how much more complex could this get?"

So here's my challenge. What absolutely torturous grammatical features can you imagine a hypothetical language having? Features which, mercifully, you have never encountered in a real language?

Here's the one I thought of: what if you had to conjugate adverbs as well as verbs? That is, what if adverbs took on different endings to agree with the verb in person, number, tense, mood, and voice. And of course, an adverb might not belong to the same "conjugation" as the verb it modifies (that would be too simple!).

For example: "I run quickly, they ran quicklash, we will have run quickabokt"

Ok, your turn! What feature do you think would be part of the Language From Hades ? :)

Many people claim that just by knowing how to speak a basic 2nd or 3rd language by attending classes (taught) or listening to native speakers makes them being fluent in the language and thus is an indication of them displaying linguistic intelligence. What do you think?

Hello!

I have been learning Japanese throughout the year. On the website I had been learning from, it said that is pronounced "Dess". Though however, in some of the subbed anime I've watched, they pronounced it "Desu" (Dess oo) on some occasions. I've also switched programs, and they use both "Dess" and "Desu" on different occasions.

So... is only one of these right? Are both acceptable? If not... which do I use? Thank you in advance for any information!
