Arabic is the language I want to learn for many reasons, including being part Arab. I want to learn Farsi, because I want to be able to read the poems of Rumi and Hafiz in the original language. Also, my serious boyfriend is Persian. Uh, Don't tell me I can't, I won't listen to that. Can't I learn them in a side-by-side complementary way? Is there a technique you linguists out there have used with some success? I can already sort of read both, though the vowels are confusing to me. I haven't been in a classroom setting for either yet, so I will have to wait till I can to use that method...

I'm looking into both diachronic (historical) and synchronic (sociolectal, dialectal) variation, especially where the two tenses overlap. I know the basics of how they are each used, but I was wondering how that usage might vary from person to person.

Also, if you know any details on its evolution, that would be very helpful. For those unfamiliar with the term "imperfect", it is used to describe a past tense with continuous, incomplete, or coincident aspect.
