Arabic is the language I want to learn for many reasons, including being part Arab. I want to learn Farsi, because I want to be able to read the poems of Rumi and Hafiz in the original language. Also, my serious boyfriend is Persian. Uh, Don't tell me I can't, I won't listen to that. Can't I learn them in a side-by-side complementary way? Is there a technique you linguists out there have used with some success? I can already sort of read both, though the vowels are confusing to me. I haven't been in a classroom setting for either yet, so I will have to wait till I can to use that method...

Hey, I will master them! Give me hope...
Wait, define "master". I know it's hard to master them for the native speakers even.
But to be able to read and converse, and be semi-fluent in both is important to me.

Hey Mr."Lose the raghead traditions. You'll be a better person."
Ypu'll be a better person if you just stay in your doghouse of racism. I love the Middle East, among many places that I am connected to, and will be connected to. No, I don't mean in a terrorist way.

your right dont listen to them. I learned both at the same time before! i went to colledge. i have three 5 year degrees in 1 in farsi 1 in arabic and 1 in urdu. my major is in middle eastern history ( primarly Irainian History) and middle eastern languages. my first love being farsi.
But first you have to learn the differnce between the two farsi is farsi and arabic is arabic the two are vastly different. you can get tapes from the library that would help.
Also dont depend to much on the vowls try to learn with out the vowls a lot of times in farsi you will not see the vowls add tothe written word such as on the news papers , letters etc. They assume you have memorized the word and know it. complicated so its best to start with a book that has vowls then start losing the vowls as you go along make sense ? hope so good luck!

Although their letters are very similar, it's like learning two completely different languages. By no means will you master either, but if you have the capability to aquire some language skills, this will definately be a challenge. You just have to practice...

Edit: By master, I mean have the fluency you seek. It's like a 40 year old immigrant learning english. The immigrant will be able to put words together to make sense, but will leave out crucial words and not pluralize certain words, or place words in the wrong order. In arabic, you have to worry about the battle of the sexes, where most words have different endings for masculin or feminin. You also must learn all the tenses, which can be similar to french in difficulty. The word order resembles that of french as well. If you can speak french, then it's just a step up because you have to add in more accents to words.

There are many good CD Roms and books and I ma currently using Wightwick books to learn exactly those two. Persian and Arabic. Farsi is a term for Persian, but most Persians become deeply offended if you use say you are learning Farsi.

The books that I 'm using are very much written as if for elementary grade level and have been very helpful. To understand dialect watch films, that is how most foreigners learn English, television. Sad but true. Hope it helps a little.
