My Master Sergeant spent a great deal of time on a mural in our battalion's stairwell that depicts, rather well, a collage of scenes related to the military and more specifically, combat engineers.

We are the modern evolution of the old french trench diggers dating back to wars fought with cannon. Those men were called Sappers in English, and it is our present day nickname. Our Motto is Sappers Lead the Way and he attempted to include this in the mural.

Unfortunately, the Internet translation sites yielded less than intelligible results and he wrote something like fossor plumbum via, which means ditch-digger, lead (like the element, Pb) and Road.

Not quite it, MSgt.

So, if any Latin majors know how to actually translate "Sappers lead the Way" that would be awesome. Or at least, less embarrassing.

I am self-studying German now and I have read in several books that in Germans "ich" is pronounced as something between "ikh" (as in Spanish) and "iyy" or even "ish", but in northern Germany it is pronounced "ikh". Right? Can any German visitors of Yahoo! explain to me how exactly to pronounce it properly? Thanks in advance.

I need to find the exact German equivalent to the following adjectives... (the context in within brackets. Note that I am referring to people's treats or characteristics -in all cases):

tolerant (e.g. tolerant of strangers)
generous (e.g. he is very generous to his children)
sensitive (e.e. she is very sensitive to music)
sincere (e.g. he was sincere in his praise)

I've gotten a couple of remarks from Brits on this site, probably joking, but I can never be too sure, about how Americans are always desecrating the English language through the use of words like "y'all", "aint", and "gonna". Is this just a friendly jab at us (which I believe), or does this actually annoy people?

I am a college junior in California, and so far i have taken a few years of Spanish and that is all. I want to learn other languages in order to expand my options of working abroad. Any ideas? What languages will be most useful in doing non-profit work in developing countries (i don't know which yet)?

I should clarify that I love *all* languages, French being my favorite foreign language thus far. -- But I am increasingly fascinated by Latin, and I am looking for some resources with which I might study it. Tutors and classes, while the most compelling options, are not practical in this case.

So how do you suggest I learn this dead language on my own?

....or any other part of the world besides America. They arn't African Americans if they arn't American. Does anybody else feel like this is wrong? I know the United ***** College Fund refuses to change it's name every time black people decide to change what they call themselves.
