classes don't help. I've been taking spanish since 6th grade and I am a junior in college now I still can't speak spanish. the best way to learn is go to that country and live there for a while.

There are lots of things you can do to learn a foreign language... joining a class is a great idea because you'll be able to listen and speak the language... and going to the country where they speak that language it's even better, but not everyone can afford the budget to do that!

So, here are some great tips:

1. At your home and office

Surround yourself with the language you're learning: make labels for your furniture, appliances, and walls; buy or create a calendar and use it.

2. On your browser

Set up as homepage some site with learning resources of the language you're interested in. If you use Windows and Internet Explorer, you can set your computer to display menus and dialogs in that language too!

3. Music & Movies

I've always believed that music is a great resource to learn a new language... you can download some nice songs and learn the lyrics... that way you practice listening and pronunciation...

Movies are also great to practice a new language. Rent some DVDs and set the audio to the language you're learning... if you're a beginner, set the subtitles in English (or your primary language)... if you're intermediate, set the subtitles in that language too... if you're advanced... don't watch subtitles at all!

4. Practice with friends and family

If you have friends or family that speak that language, it's a great and free way to practice. If you don't, join a chat room or a forum where that language is spoken and meet new friends...

5. Shopping

When you go shopping, practice with yourself - count out your four apples or six cans of tuna fish in that language, look at prices and imagine how to say them, etc.

6. Vocabulary building

Keep a notebook handy so that you can write down new words and keep track of ones you need to look up. This can also be part of a journal or language scrapbook.

If you are around people who speak the language on a regular basis, it is actually faster to learn the language than taking a class. A lot of my co-workers are Spanish-speaking and I have learned pretty well just from communicating with them. Failing that, a bookstore will carry videos or tapes that can help you learn a foreign language.

No its not necessary to join a class. The easiest way is to move to or long visit to a country that speaks the language you want to learn. BUT if that is impossible..I've used various methods & the best way to be successful @ being understood in a different language is to buy software that is interactive with your voice repeating words/phrases you hear. It Is NOT easy, though almost fun tring to learn this way. Just embarrassing if someone is watching/listening to you as your doing it...

There are many books, computer programs, records, tapes on languages. Many available for cheap at your local thrift store. No class need. Depending on what language you wish to learn, you can also learn by watching any DVD you might have. I learned enough Spanish to get by by watching the cartoon DORA THE EXPLORER and watching a film I knew by heart and switching the dialog to Spanish. My mayte has a 40 minute commute and is learning ITALIAN on his way to work off a CD. He also watches Italian news and listens to Italian radio off the net.

It may be difficult, but possible...there are many legit learning CD's out there that "guarantee" that you learn the language...

I am in a spanish class right now and couldn't imagine doing it any other way... I just have way too many questions...

Again, it is possible and I know people that have done it.

The best way is to immerse yourself in the language...watching shows and listening to it as much as possible

It's not necessary, but definitely easier and more fun in a class.

If you absolutely must do it at home, use an interactive computer course. But then make some friends that speak it so you can practice with people.

It depends. If you learn well by yourself, you can buy books and CDs which let you teach yourself. If you learn better by interaction, and want to know how well you are really doing, and want someone who can give you guidance, then classes are the way forward. Plus, it's a good way to meet new people.

Good luck!
