I noticed that when asian people speak english they are soft spoken but in their native tongue the volume seems to be above average. Is this just an effect of the way the words sound? Anyone else notice this?

I mean, just to get a job that I am perfectly qualified for, I must know a language that is not my own. The ads always say must be bilingual. What they really mean is you must speak spanish and english, because if I speak english and chinese, I am still not going to get the job. So, my other question is, why don't hispanics learn english like all of the other immigrants from other countries. My mother in law is filipino and she had to learn english just to survive here. Whats up with that?

Would you bother to learn another language if you had to travel thousands of miles out of your way to speak it? A lot of Europeans seem to look down on Americans who aren't muti-lingual, but none of them seem to realize that America is big enough that you don't have to know two or three languages to get by here like you may have to in Europe. If the entire continent of Europe spoke one language predominantly, wouldn't more Europeans be unilingual?
