I have read somewhere that there are only about 26 recognized surnames in Korea, of which Kim, Park and Lee are the most common. So this is the reason why one would meet so many Kims there. The other responses pointed to the common Anglo-Saxon surnames of Smith, Johnson, Miller etc., but of course the situation in English-speaking countries is not as extreme as in Korea.

According to statistics, about 1/3 of Koreans have the last name of either Kim, Park, or Lee. It's like the abundance of the last name Smith or Johnson in the U.S.

Hope that helps!
