I've been reading a lot of the answers regarding St. Patrick's day and I find it astonishing that so many (NOT ALL) americans think it's considered bad luck in Ireland to wear green on Paddy's day!!!?

Why weren't we informed?! I mean, here we are in Ireland for as long as I can remember, wearing green on the 17th of March, and no one bothers to tell us it's bad luck?! That's very bad form!

Basically, whoever thinks that is completely wrong. We don't have that pinching tradition here, presumably cos if you pinched someone for not wearing green, you'd get punched in the face!

I was wearing my GREEEEEEN rugby jersey, as were most people on Paddy's Day, cos it was a momentus rugby occaision. But Lots of other people were wearing green too.

And lots of people wear shamrocks on Paddy's day on their shirts or whatever. FRESH shamrocks, as in real, three leafed ones. Not plastic ones.

So there we were right, in the pub, obviously, the parade going on outside, watching Ireland give Italy a thrashing in the Six Nations (Rugby) (Oval Ball) (Google it).

Anyway, up until the VERY last minute of the French match, it lokoed like Ireland was about to win Her first Six Nations (well back then it was five) title since 1985... And then, the dream was over. I nearly cried!!! We were all getting ready to buy champagne and cigars and go MENTAL, but then, after giving Italy such a beating, France managed to win on points difference.

I was utterly HEARTBROKEN and it ruined my Paddy's day.

Was anyone else on the same boat?

Does anyone in America (who isn't Irish) even know who St. Patrick is, let alone why he has a day named after him?

Me and a couple of mates were out on Saturday "celebrating" St Patricks day which I do every year when it suddenly dawned on me that I did not have a clue what I was celebrating!

Why the interest? Do the Irish participate in St Davids day celebrations? Not that we, the english, have any real offical celebrations for St David anyway - we rather take part in St Patricks day. Is there a historical reason?

Saw a few people yesterday that had bright red shirts on. it stood out and I was wondering if there is some code or thing I'm not aware of. There was enough of them that got me to think.
