Saint Patrick was the first Christian to bring Christianity to Ireland. People started celebrating Saint Patricks day to remember him and as a way of remembering or thinking of all Christian missionaries worldwide and praying for them. Somewhere along the line, the message of the day got lost and people just started partying for no reason at all. Thanks for taking the time to learn the true reason for this holiday.

Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá 'le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy's Day or Paddy's Day "Saint Patties Day" and "Saint Patty's Day", is the feast day which annually celebrates Saint Patrick (385–461), the patron saint of Ireland, on March 17, the day on which Saint Patrick died. The day is the national holiday of the Irish people. It is a Bank Holiday in Northern Ireland, and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Montserrat, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the rest of Canada, Australia, Great Britain and the United States, it is widely celebrated but is not an official holiday.
It became a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding[1] in the early part of the 17th century, and is a holy day of obligation in the Roman Catholic church in Ireland.

It was St. Patrick that came over to Ireland and converted us all from being Pagans to Christianity. Thats why hes held in such high regard. And then he got rid of the snakes and went around preaching. Thats why we celebrate every year. Don't know why its a big drinking session though

Actually in our day and times, it is about festivities with a bit of a nod to the religious aspect.
A nice break from lent for those who observe it.
