Saint Patrick was a Roman living in Britain and was taken as a slave in Ireland. He escaped and returned to his home in Britain but found that he no longer identified with his family and friends. He decided to return to Ireland and is generally credited with uniting all of the tribal warlords in Ireland. He did this all in the name of Christ.
He is also credited with driving all of the snakes from Ireland.
Thoma Carlyle wrote a book called "How the Irish Saved Civilization". The book has some great insights into the life of Saint Patrick.

It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family's estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian.

St. Patrick's day is celebrated because as the legend goes he banished all the snakes from Ireland. Now this a metaphor for him coming in as a representative of the church and converting all the non-believers and spreading religion. We celebrate him for his bravery in the face of "evil".

He supposedly banished all of the snakes from Ireland, which would explain why there aren't any. Also, we celebrate him, to, in essence, celebrate Irish heritage.
