green signifies catholics and orange signifies protestants. you probably ought to wear the correct color if you know any actual irish or they might get offended.

i has to do with the fact that st patrick is the patron saint of ireland and the irish flag has the green and orange on it. its a patriotic thing.

IN the USA its just because its St. Pats day.
Yet #1 is right about the color choices and wear you wear them. I am catholic and we always wore green with a little orange ribbon, to honor the others. It was a good thing.

The original reason was to show the English they were proud to be Irish.Back in the Victorian Era Queen Elizabeth outlawed the wearing of green,forbade harps and pipes to be played (under penalty of DEATH) in an attempt to quell a rise in Irish patriotism.It sorta backfired...Ta Failte romhat!

green is the irish national color (or should i say...colour). if you take a look at Irland through pics, you'll understand why. it is very lush and green, it's beautiful
