Christmas - November 2007

I'm on a BIG BIG budget this christmas. This has really upset as all my plans now have to be cancelled. I usually have several meals out with family, trips to the theatre and spend £200 on goodies, I also buy a new outfit for christmas day (it's a long going tradition in our family to see my christmas outfit, its usually something silly like an elf).

But this year I cant do much at all. Whereas I normally have about £500 to spend on treats, food and activities (doesnt include presents), I now have about £175. And that money has to be both mine and my partners leisure money over christmas. What can I do?

We never had milk in our household when I was younger...or vegetables 0_0...(HEY I'M 20 and I turned out just fine...)
so I always left FRESCA or some other soft drink and meatloaf or whatever we had for dinner that night (because my cookies were way too precious to share) next to the nativity scene and my sealed letter to santa (which I later in life found in an old shoebox in the closet along with my other letters...yes it was traumatizing...)

...in my innocent mind I think I thought I was being eccentric and relieving the fat white guy from messed up ginger bread cookies made by runny nosed kids....:p

anyway, just wondering if anyone did the same or actually left special cookies and ?% milk....

I've been feeling Christmasy lately...so someone humour me

Hi there
Ok so I'm working as an English teacher here in China and the school i work at is organizing a Christmas party for the 22nd of December.
I'm in charge of doing a play with the students but to be honest, i have no idea what to do as i only know "the birth of jesus" play.

I want something that involves more around Santa and something that the students and the parents can enjoy.

any help would be mostly appreciated.

its a ticketmaster giftcard. see i don't really know how much to put on it. he likes going to concerts and hockey games.

should i put enough on for just him? or for two people?
I was kind of thinking to put $300 on it, but some people are saying that's not enough, while others are saying that's too much.

My friend called and said she ordered me a Dooney for Christmas. Her gift to me since I've never owned a designer bag before. What do I get her as a gift in return. I've never owned a designer bag because I cant afford those crazy priced things!!

For me its the traditions we used to do...
I had 5 siblings so it was always fun around christmas!
We had this huge van and would always drive around and look at christmas lights together and sing christmas songs...
On Christmas eve everyone on my dads side would go to his mothers house..and there were 8 different familys there..so it was a huge party! We would open gifts there and it was so much fun playing w/ the cousins and the parents siting around talking and having fun!!!Then Christmas day us younger kids would always wake up at like 6 am and Go into the living room and try and guess what are presents were from Santa..lol and mom& dad...after all that we would go to my Mothers side of the family's house...and it was pretty much the same thing...Opening presents and playing w/ the cousins..then we would go to my dads Real dads house...and visit them!What i miss the most is all my family being together and having fun...nowadays its not the same..what does everyone else miss?

My family - pretty commercial. We give gifts, eat dinner, go home. There is no sitting around for hours enjoying each other & playing cards, there are no gifts from the heart - mainly a bunch of gift cards flying around.

If I were to give something philanthropic like a donation to feed the hungry in their name - they'd look at me like I was crazy.

If I suggested we do something more - they'd tell me that 2 hrs was enough & they wanted to sleep.

So this holiday has me thinking deeper. Should I stay here in our home town (big suburban city), or should we move to a smaller close knit community? Should we give the gift cards bc that's what people want or should we THINK about the gift & give one of meaning (material or non-material)? I have been questioning my family and the way things are done and how I want my kids to "get" Christmas.

Just wondering if the holidays have others questioning things as well?

Have you heard the rumor that the ACLU has filed a lawsuit against the US Government, trying to ban celebrating Christmas as a national holiday? If this ever happens, Dec. 25th would be like any other day of the year.....with folks working, banks and post offices open. This lawsuit is apparently taking place in the 9th curcuit court of appeals in CA. How do you think you would like this ???

I start putting up decorations the week of Thanksgiving. I've seen several people that put them up the begining of Nov. I find nothing wrong with this, and personally think it looks nice. Why do so many people feel that it is distasteful and needs to be done the 2nd or 3rd week in December? Its not hurting anyone. Its not costing anyone else, anything. If you don't want decorations up yet, don't put them up...but why do so many people have to complain about those people that do have them up. I've seen so many answers & remarks on here & other sites saying people should do the "decent" thing and wait until mid December. When did that become the "decent" time for decorations? How do you feel about Christmas decorations???

So I've been seeing this guy for just under a month now- it'll be just under two by the time Christmas rolls around. He's really hard to buy for- he's 18, a laptop dj, likes his white wine and Southern Comfort and owns a car, if those basics help any. The only thing he's REALLY "into" is music, which is why he's so hard to buy for- he has so many CDs and literally thousands upon thousands of songs downloaded to his laptop that it'd be useless to buy him a CD or something. I'm not sure what DVDs he has and doesn't have. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I know people ask this question a lot, but I read some and I still don't have a good answer. What are some things that a 13 yr. old girl would want for Christmas? I already have a cell phone & an iPod. And I hate getting gift cards, b/c I hate spending money, so money's out too. I don't know why I don't like it, but I don't, I love shopping though. I've already asked for a digital camera & a gift basket from Bath & Body Works. I don't want any CD's, b/c 1.)I have iTunes and 2.)I don't really listen to music besides my iPod. I already have a Nintendo DS, and don't want a PSP, & we can't afford a Wii. My grandparents are going to redo mine & my sister's room [[we share a room]] for out present from them. I'm not that big on concerts, magizines, boooks, and my mom already has A LOT of nail stuff. What else can I ask for, all I can find is the digital camera & the gift basket.
