I'm on a BIG BIG budget this christmas. This has really upset as all my plans now have to be cancelled. I usually have several meals out with family, trips to the theatre and spend £200 on goodies, I also buy a new outfit for christmas day (it's a long going tradition in our family to see my christmas outfit, its usually something silly like an elf).

But this year I cant do much at all. Whereas I normally have about £500 to spend on treats, food and activities (doesnt include presents), I now have about £175. And that money has to be both mine and my partners leisure money over christmas. What can I do?

Get stuffed Checkers, you know nothing about me, I give £100's to charity every year and raise £1000's for charity every year! Last christmas I went to the childrens ward at our hostpital dressed up to give out gifts, so don't judge me you idiot.

Invite people over and have each person bring a dish, and some things to make some ornaments with. Ok, yes this does take some creativity - you know just the regular glass balls, you can glue two eyes on it, a little red pompom for a nose and get some pipe cleaners and bend them to look like antlers and you have a cute reindeer ornament - easy enough for a child to do- hot glue guns work well just have an adult help the little ones. Glitter glue, and just draw, scribble on the ornaments. pop a bunch of popcorn and string it on a string - using a needle and some sewing thread poke the popcorn on and tie the strings together - some cranberries here and there looks really nice on the tree and the birds love it when Christmas is over. Get some friends together and have cookie/candy making day(s) Visit you local arts and crafts store - they will probably have lots of different things to do - buy some bags of plastic faceted beads to string together or make ornaments out of. Go to some of your parties, just don't drink as much. Have an origami folding party and then using a needle and thread poke a hole through it and string it up, you may need to put a little piece of tape over the first hole to keep the thread from pulling through. If you would like more details, I'd love to share them with you - I've never really had much $ to spend on Christmas, and almost always make candy, cookies, ornaments and other things for friends and family. and I was kind of brought up with the idea that making something for someone was really more thougthful - of course time is kind of limited at this point to maybe make gifts, but there are lots of fun things you can do without spending much $. there are many premade ornaments and other things that you either put together or paint that don't cost much $, if you use acrylic paints, and some other types, just be careful of clothes - it doesn't wash out of material , use some old t-shirts - buy some t-shirts to decorate, having friends and family do things together makes it fun, and everyone can share in the cost of things like paint, making it less expensive. Regular acrylic paint doesn't stick to glass and some other surfaces, so make sure you get the right paint for what you are working on - Feel free to e-mail me if you want. If I don't know the answer, I'll try to help you find it. Have fun.

Have you ever been to a clothes swap party? Everybody takes along a bottle of wine and a bag of clothes...The clothes are piled into a heap in the middle and people take it in turns to hold them up and give them the hard sell..It's really funny...Have a dice or a pack of cards to roll or cut for the winner when there are more people interested in an item.. You could ask your friends to bring all their silly daft stuff, and you might manage to cobble together an outfit...even if you look like a throwback from the 80's..!
It's a good laugh and it's good to recycle and re-use stuff...Have you been on Yahoo's Freecycle? There's probably one in your area...You could ask if anyone has a a spare outfit in the back of their cupboards....Have a very merry Christmas..!

well instead of eating out so much, try having a pot luck dinner in. you could watch dvds, play games, and everyone invited has to bring something, that way you don't have the cost of all the food and everything. For activities, go out and look at Christmas lights--if its too expensive for gas, bundle up and go for a walk together to see the lights. Instead of a new outfit for christmas, find one you haven't worn in a while, and wear it again. Or use some tinsel to make a halo for your hair, and just wear a festive shirt and jeans or something. Figure out exactly what corners can be cut this year, and try it out.

Have meals at home with the family, as it's nice to do this, have them stay over so everyone can enjoy the evening and have a few to drink. Bake some stuff, cakes, cookies, bread. It'd be a great treat to have home made things. Improvise with the outfit, either make it, or mix and match with previous ones.

this is christmas time, family time so make a big deal of decorating the tree and put some festive music and some nibbles and drinks and make a night of it. you can tickets to a panto for cheap and go carol singing at your nearest venue on xmas eve. stay in with hubby and watch a xmas dvd with a cup of hotchocolate! go ice skating together! instead of a meal out with family get everyone to bring a dish of somethign to yours and have abit of everything! theres lots of ways to have fun without splashing out! christmas is comercial enough as it is! dont make your time together be to!
