It is a common misconception that 5 de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day, which is celebrated on the 16th of September.
Mexico's independence was recognized by the Spanish viceroy in 1821. Since the late 19th century, a re-enactment has become traditional: the President of Mexico rings Hidalgo's bell (now at the National Palace on the Zócalo in Mexico City) and repeats Hidalgo's words (or a variant thereof) every year at 11:00 pm of September 15.

5 de Mayo commemorates the victory of Mexican forces over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Drives me crazy... that's all. I love celebrating, don't stop!! at least now you know the meaning

How did it go? Fun---or just really cheesy?

We exchange names each year and I ended up with my 17 year old nephew. The rule is we have to make something, sort of a giving of self, gift from the heart, home made, like that. Need ideas so I can get started. I am fairly well rounded so any ideas will be useful.

I work in a hotel and everyone is trying to think of ideas for our Christmas and New Years Packages. I was just wanted to know what people like for, I guess you could say "universal gifts" that are still Christmasy and holiday-ish.

Today is left handed day. I am right handed, so I am not celebrating...why is there no day for right handed people? I honestly think right handed is the better way to go

Commerical costumes are sometimes hard to fit. Looking for something that can be done with make up and or household items that make it obvious it is a costume, but not necessarily require buying a costume at a store.

I am from the caribbean and annually and we are famous for an event called Carnival. It is a wonderful time of year where soca and calypso songs are played.Steel pan music is in the air and people dress in their costumes and so forth. However some events are really vulgar.Nakedness in the costumes and violence are the negatives that come out of it. Some people (MOST RELIGIONS)have their negatives towards carnival but i think its an event that brings out the culture and illustrates to others that this is who we are ,and where we came from (African Heritage) especially the jouvert event. The true meaning of carnival has been transformed into something paganistic when it was not oriented to be like that.
I want to know what you think and your opinion in celebrating Carnival.

So, Halloween is less than 3 months a way and I need to start coming up with some ideas. Last year I kinda just threw some things together and was a white bunny but it was crapass....and for 2 or 3 years previous I've been a nurse so I'm kinda over that bid. And I've never taken advantage of the "dressing like a slut rule" at Halloween so maybe, and just maybe this year I will have fun with that. So please, lend me your suggestions. And remember, it has to be something sexy and fun and ORIGINAL....nothing stupid like a duck or anything. ORIGINALITY PEOPLE!!!!

I have been searching on EBay and Google for ages, and all I can find is the 'Phantom.' I don't need a wig or anything, just a dress.
