Commerical costumes are sometimes hard to fit. Looking for something that can be done with make up and or household items that make it obvious it is a costume, but not necessarily require buying a costume at a store.

I think the best costumes are the ones that people put together themselves. Store-bought costumes take no thought; anyone can slap some money down on the counter and walk out with one, but home-made getups are often a little clever and make me smile.

How about going all in white, sticking a cuddly toy penguin to your shoulder with safety pins and going as Antarctica?

Most of the traditional Hallowe'en costumes can easily be done with ordinary clothes and only a little outlay. A black top and skirt with a few accessories makes a witch, for example. A square of black fabric, pinned to the shoulders, over a white dress shirt, bow tie and black trousers makes a vampire.

This site has lots and lots of user-submitted ideas, many of which would be very easy to put together:

A bee - all you need is a yellow sweat suit and some black tape and maybe a headband with "antennae".

A grape - a purple sweat suit stuffed evenly all around the top so it's totally round. Or, a bunch of grapes - anything neutral color underneath and a bunch of purple balloons taped around the top.

An apple - red sweat suit stuffed. (Just about any round fruit can be done this way.)

A granny (or gramps) - buy stuff at a thrift store, use temporary dye to whiten your hair and don't forget the half-glasses. For the granny one, roll knee-high stockings down to your ankles and wear gloves also.

A 50's dude or dudette - full skirt and pin or lightly sew a poodle, button down cardigan over a white blouse and hair in a ponytail , or for the dude - leather jacket, jeans rolled up at the cuffs, white t-shirt.

Go to a thrift store and look around.

I know this has been said already but my brother went one year as Mimi from Drew Carey. It was the most hilarious thing ever! He's not that overweight, but he still looked a lot like him. When I was younger I wanted to be just like him so the next day after school I wore his wig around the house like a mindless child.

Ok try a pirate, like Jonny Depp in pirates of the Carribean but more feminine (if female obv)
Get jeans and roll one leg up to you knee and then get stripey knee high socks.
A brown top with a creamy type waistcoat and some fake gold hooped earings and necklaces in bulk.
A bandana with curly hair and try put some extensions in of various off colours from your hair, mabye some beads aswell.
Black shoes would go fine, and a patch and your ready to go!

There was a lady at our office that came as an old house granny...had on a ratty bathrobe, a small pillow stuffed in the back of her pants (big booty image), rollers in her hair with a hairnet, smeared makeup, mis-matched slippers, knee-length stockings rolled down to her ankes, and a pack of cigarettes stuck in one of the pockets of her bathrobe! OMG, she was a hoot! It was absolutely hilarious! .... I went as a baby that year - stuck my hair up on my head, some pajamas with sheep on them, a teddy bear, and an oversized pacifier .. was kinda cute too.

a couple of years ago for work at halloween, i made a burlap "pagaent gown", considering i live in tennessee, it had a pocket for "skoal", a pocket for my box cutter, light blue gingham trim, i also put my hair in pigtails, got one of those .88 cent tiaras, a pair of "bubba teeth" out of a bubblegum machine, some red satin ribbon, abvout 8 inches wide and with gold glitter paint, made myself a "pagaent queen sash". it was hilarious, i also won a 3 day weekend off with pay. did i meantion im "fairly overweight" too, lol.

Pajamas, bathrobe (open) or a warm shawl or small blanket throw to wrap around your shoulders, oral thermometer, old fashioned ice pack or hot water bottle, a pair of chicken feet house slippers, and a chicken mask.

What are you? Bird flu.

Mimi from the Drew Carrey show. I think that would be the perfect outfit. It just really requires make-up
