I read a question about why people use hyphenated americans. DO I NEED TO REMIND PEOPLE THAT MAINSTREAM AMERICA DID NOT ACCEPT, ASIANS, BLACKS, AFRICANS, LATINOS, NATIVE AMERICANS, OR MIDDLE EASTERNERS AS AMERICANS? American called asians gooks, blacks *****, coloured, n*gger, latino spics, wetbackers, natives redskins, and middle easterners arab n*ggers. America constantly pointed out that we were anything but Americans! The hyphenated american was created when America pushed us aside and we formed our own identities.

P.S. Do people know the history of things before they spout off their mouths about stuff?

Why do Americans pride themselves on being, for example, Irish American, or perhaps French American, or maybe even African American or Asian American, when in fact they usually have no connection to the country and/or culture in question? I think it's a bit silly when people refer to themselves as African American, yet do not have a parent which was born and raised on the African continent, or as French or German American for example, when they do no know the language of these countries and probably would not be able to locate them on a world map. Why, then, the emphasis on being a hyphenated American from this or that country or culture?

Greetings,

I have only recently heard about the Belarusian people, and that they differ much more from Russians than I thought. Though since they're called 'White Russians', that is rather deceptive. Can someone list the differences between them, and perhaps show what Russians tend to think of Belarusians, or other neighbors thinkof them? I.E, are they seen as more Europeanized, more Slavic, more thuggist or effete, etc? Or can any Belarusians weigh in about what they consider their national identity or stereotype? (For instance, many Midwestern Americans would consider the cowboy their iconic image).

Much appreciated.

I am very open minded and like to see how others really think/feel about toucy subjects. (I ask these types of questions face to face as well) Funny thing is, usually black people don't have an issue with me asking honest questions. The whites get more offended that I would ask such a thing. Go figure - - -

The blacks on the city council won't let it go. They are constantly fighting over this while the black section of town has huge problems and should be the concern (helping them would mean more than naming a stupid street) Why don't they spend their time on really making a difference for their race?

Don't say there already is. I mean specifically naming something ALL WHITE - I really think it would upset the black community. Isn't that hypocritical?

There were rumours in my family that my grandfather was part Mic Mac Indian. In my family, we're all british and some German (on my dad's side). My mom's family all came from Newfoundland where there were many Indians. Her father had dark leathery skin with high cheekbones. I feel like I am Indian, but can I say it?
