A civil war was fought in North America over the 'right' of a man to be free. Many years later Martin Luther King led a movement, against sometimes fierce resistance, to establish those rights.

This is a clear case to me of rights being denied, fought for, and eventually accepted.

I would guess that most people in the world are now against slavery.

In this context do animals have rights? If so who fought for them? Who granted them?

Please keep you answers fairly short.

race and minorities, do the ethnic, people of color, minorities (i don't even know how to correctly refer to people other than white without offending them) always respond hostally? i mean, without even reading the question. it's like you mention the word "race" and they jump all over it like, "you're a close-minded nazi" and "you're racist, i don't have time for people like you". is it because they just want to shut me up because i might make a valid point about racism toward causasians?

"Foetuses and newborn babies do not understand feelings of pain, according to research published today in the British Medical Journal."
"Infants do not fully recognise pain until they are about four months old, when they "learn" it from the outside world, said a Glasgow University psychologist, Stuart Derbyshire"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,329457671-103690,00.html

Dated april 14th 2006

How preposterous that they should even entertain the thought that their studies are objective. So infants can't define/recognize pain and therefore don't suffer from pain?
Leaving the abortion issue to one side (please)... do YOU think because newborns don't know what the meaning of pain is that they don't experience it as pain?

Is it true that most Hispanic people and also people of other cultures think that American women are more "promiscuous?" I have heard this before and was just curious. I am white and American and I plan on saving myself for marriage. I had a hispanic friend that only speaks Spanish ask me if I had a boyfriend and how many boyfriends I had had before. I am 19 and I said I currently don't have one and I have had 2 relationships before. He smiled and I go "mal?" or is that bad? and he said "ohh noo" and he said "tu eres mas bonita y no tienes novio..." Do you think he was implying anything and do they find it strange or odd that I have only been in two relationships and I am not "promiscuous"?

One of the British national daily newspapers is asking readers "what it means to be British?"

Some of the emails are hilarious but this is one from a chap in Switzerland....

Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer,

then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way,

to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

.. And the most British thing of all?... Suspicion of anything foreign!

I understand that the whole "Jewish" thing passes on from the mother, but it was not like that before the 1980's. When my mother was born, she would have been considered Jewish (her father is Jewish)... Unfortunately, she is not a practicing Jew, so I suppose this doesn't sit too well with the Rabbi. I now consider myself a Jew, but the Rabbi refuses to teach me anything because he says that I am not. My family and I celebrate Chanukah and Christmas in December... we also celebrate Passover sometimes. Do you think that this whole "mother" law is ridiculous? Because before, you were a Jew if either your mother or father was Jewish. Why did they change the law?

This is an odd question, but isnt it a bit odd to try to have pride in heritage if your American?
I mean, I'm half Irish, and a bunch of other stuff in the other half, but I feel i have no right to claim that I am Irish because my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents etc were all from America. Just because Irish americans married other Irish Americans doesnt neccasarily mean to me that their children are Irish. (im using Irish only as an example, this applies to all nationalities in America). I mean, when your american you are American, whats the use of trying to have cultural pride in a country you amost likely have nothing to do with? I have never seen Ireland, scotland or france so how can I brag about having heritage in any of those places...I hope someone understands where I am coming from, or if maybe they can give me a new perspective.

I live in Germany, and I notice that a lot of Europeans (mostly teenagers) try to copy American fads like clothes styles and music right off of MTV. But then if you try to talk to them, they will tell you that they hate Americans, all while standing in line in a Burger King or McDonald's? Why copy us if we're so bad?

I feel like a lot people and myself sometimes use these terms very loosely. Sure I have been discriminated against a few times in the past but I don't see that the same as experiencing racism. I consider experiencing racism to be when someone prevents someones else from doing something because of their skin color.
