"Infants do not fully recognise pain until they are about four months old, when they "learn" it from the outside world, said a Glasgow University psychologist, Stuart Derbyshire"

How preposterous that they should even entertain the thought that their studies are objective. So infants can't define/recognize pain and therefore don't suffer from pain?
Leaving the abortion issue to one side (please)... do YOU think because newborns don't know what the meaning of pain is that they don't experience it as pain?

Considering that pain is a response to stimuli...yes. They may not associate the word/meaning of pain but on a purely animilistic point of view...they are senitient being and can respond to negative stimuli. pinching = pain...

Special care babies most certainly feel pain. They get disturbed by noise bright lights and position, this is all separate from the actual medical procedures that they have to go through. If they aren't effected by these things then why do these things have such a drastic effect on their development? From very young the neuro pathways are formed. Some children with abnormal cognitive understanding of pain express it with laughter, but it doesn't mean they aren't feeling it. This worries me a bit because its open to erroneous interpretation.

They may not know the word "pain" or how to define or describe it, but they sure do feel it- otherwise why would they cry when feeling pain- even just discomfort like hunger or being wet? We can only hop the professor isn't reborn, because many people might want to poke him, as a new infant, with a pin!

My twins were born early, and in the neonatal unit they were given pain relief when undergoing tests etc. I was told that until recently, newborns had been treated as though they didn't feel pain, but now studies had proved that they did and procedures had changed. That was thirteen years ago.

I can't believe that this has come up like this. They have nerves and feel pain, it's common sense.

This is a poor attempt to influence the public by low-level researchers. You and I do not feel pain the same way so why would a new born feel pain in some specified, dictated manner. Newborns react instinctively to discomfort. Pain is very uncomfortable and they have extreme reactions to it. So we can infer from that they feel pain.

Thats ridiculous,of course they feel pain, its been proved they feel pain in the womb even.

My twin grandchildren were born early 17 months ago and needed lots of needles inserted in veins for drugs to be given and the screams they gave would convince these idiots they definately do feel pain.

Newborn babys DO feel pain, even if they don't understand why or whats causing it.After a baby is fed it needs to be burped ,if its not then it will begin to cause the child pain,
If newborns didn't feel pain then they wouldn't cry as much

OF COURSE they feel pain!!!

What, do nerve endings not grow until 4 months????

Maybe the studies are showing that infants just don't understand how to do anything about it or that pain is something they're capable of stopping.

Of course they feel pain, they have a fully functional brain and set of nerves. Newborns cry, and you should hear them when they get their first blood test. The preposterous idea that they don't is probably an excuse invented by pro abortionists.
