This is an odd question, but isnt it a bit odd to try to have pride in heritage if your American?
I mean, I'm half Irish, and a bunch of other stuff in the other half, but I feel i have no right to claim that I am Irish because my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents etc were all from America. Just because Irish americans married other Irish Americans doesnt neccasarily mean to me that their children are Irish. (im using Irish only as an example, this applies to all nationalities in America). I mean, when your american you are American, whats the use of trying to have cultural pride in a country you amost likely have nothing to do with? I have never seen Ireland, scotland or france so how can I brag about having heritage in any of those places...I hope someone understands where I am coming from, or if maybe they can give me a new perspective.

Nope! I'm half-Danish, and I've never been to Denmark.
I do what I can to connect to my Danish heritage, because this is a very important part of where I come from... I think as you get to a place where you want to have children, or maybe even grandchildren, you begin to see this... maybe? That you come from a past, and you are heading towards a future bigger than yourself. Your past matters, and you are only a little part of it.
I go to a Danish community sometimes to have supper, I eat Danish foods and drink *our* liquor (I wrote "their" but corrected myself). I *am* Danish, just as I am Canadian. This is a gift I will give to my children, something I will give to them apart from my future husband.

I hope this helps.

Yes, I can see exactly what you mean. All this "Irish American", "African A" "Italian A". Load of old rubbish.
