I'm Afro-Caribbean living in England so I am not African-American. It was only through the internet that I found out about this watermelon stereotype used for Black people. Apparently we all love watermelon. Did this stereotype come from America because I've never heard of it until about a year ago.
To me it's like saying "Chineese people love apples" I just don't get it. Everyone eats apples. What's so special about apples? How can this be a stereotype?
Some stereotypes I can understand a little bit but not this one. How did it come to be?

Consider these facts before deciding:

* When you go fishing and you catch something, that's good.
If you're making love and you catch something, that's bad.

* Fish don't compare you to other fishermen neither.
And don't want to know how many other fish you caught.

* In fishing you lie about the one that got away.
In loving you lie about the one you caught.

* You can catch and release a fish, you don't have to lie, and promise to still be friends after you let it go.

* You don't necessarily have to change your line to keep catching fish.

* You can catch a fish on a 20-cent frozen squid.
If you want to catch a woman you're talking dinner and a movie minimum.

* Fish don't mind if you fall asleep in the middle of fishing.

I've realized recently that my skin has turned to parchment, and everything sags and looks gross. But I still weigh 99 pounds and have a lot of energy, so I didn't think so much about it. My teaching job this year has been a challenge, with kids stamping their feet at me and refusing to do what they're told, but I've been patient and hard-working. Today, though, was really rough. I had another episode with a child who is deeply disturbed and has been in a lot of trouble, but I keep on loving him and praying for him. I made it to the afternoon, and when we were practicing for our Christmas program, a child motioned for me. When I walked over to see what he wanted, he pointed to another boy and said, "He says you're old." I can't tell you how it hurt. I used to be the popular teacher; I've always had fun with my kids while I was helping them achieve. This boy doesn't even know me; he doesn't know I lie awake at night worrying about our kids. All he sees is that I'm old.

I'll use sports as an example. When the NBA was all white the league had certain rules. Then along comes Wilt Chamberlain, and nobody could stop him. The 3 sec. rule followed. But that didnt stop what was happening, eventually the league became almost all Black. So along comes new rules. Zone defense used to be illegal, but in order to make the new European players competetive they allow zone defense now. The reason: Dirk Nowinski is too slow to guard the likes of Kevin Garnett. Before the rule change someone like Allen Iverson would regularly drop 50 points on the likes of Steve Nash and Jason Williams. Zone defense makes matchups irrelevant and allows players who are weak on defense to stay on the floor.

Do you think rules are adopted in general life that have this affect?

My 84-year-old Mom is driving me CRAZY. She has lived with my husband & I for most of the past 25 years. She has terrible health history with cancer, heart disease, sclerosis, and this year an illness caused by the bacteria c.dif which has resulted in multiple hospitalizations. She takes a ton of medicine all of which I now dole out since she is unable to keep them straight. She however will not function on a schedule. She wants to read til 2 or 3AM, then sleep until 12 o 1PM, which makes it impossible to get her meds dispensed. She won't get dressed until 5 or 6PM, she won't eat on a regular schedule, she will not drink enough water to hydrate herself but when she gets sick I'm of course on the spot to care for her/stay at the hospital/etc. Despite repeated conversations & all out arguments with her she will NOT cooperate and we end up arguing about it on a nearly daily basis. HELP?

Im Blasian. And when people meet me, they still call me african american. Its not that I'm ashamed-I'm not. I accept I'm black, I'm proud of my black side (My dad is dominican) But he isnt from africa, my mom sure as hell isnt from africa, so why do people call me "African american?"

A dinner speaker was in such a hurry to get to his engagement that when he arrived and sat down at the head table, he suddenly realized that he had forgotten his false teeth.

Turning to the man next to him he said, "I forgot my teeth." The man said, "No problem." With that he reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of false teeth. "Try these," he said.

The speaker tried them. "Too loose," he said. The man then said, "I have another pair...try these." The speaker tried them and responded, "Too tight." The man was not taken back at all. He then said, "I have one more pair of false teeth...try them."

The speaker said, "They fit perfectly." With that he ate his meal and gave his address. After the dinner meeting was over, the speaker went over to thank the man who had helped him. "I want to thank you for coming to my aid. Where is your office? I've been looking for a good dentist."

The man replied, "I'm not a dentist. I'm the local undertaker."

Take for example a female. Would you say she is bi/lesbian-CURIOUS if she's never been in a relationship with a girl, but wants to be? I don't agree with this.

If she's also never been in a relationship with a male is she bi/straight-curious?

I don't think you need to have a RELATIONSHIP with both sexes to say you're bisexual.

So are all people who have had no relationships at all straight curious, bi curious and lesbian curious all at the same time?

Are all straight people now, who are or have been in relationships, before all that were merely straight curious?

What do you think?
