My favorite Christmas present was that my father did not have to work on Christmas day, and we had christmas dinner together. There were seven children in my family, I was the fifth, and my dad worked two or three jobs. He worked every day of the week, because my mom was paralyzed, in a wheelchair after she got hit by a drunk driver, and my baby brother was brain damaged in the accident, so there were a lot of bills. Christmas day was the only day that my dad did not have to work, because everything was closed, so he used to buy a goose, and cook it for dinner, and we all ate dinner together. The best present was that my dad stayed home with us all day, and we ate together as a family.

My mom built me a doll house. We didn't have a lot back then, and she stayed up all night Christmas Eve working on it. A piece of it broke off when she came to wake me up Christmas morning, but knowing that my mom put so much time and effort into something so simple was the greatest gift I've ever received.

When I was 4 years old my father made a little kitchen table with chairs. It looked just like my mothers.

He also made them for 2 of my cousins of the same age.

He made a cradle for our dolls.

It was a special surprise for my cousins and me.

It even means more now, when I think of how much time and effort that he put into making such a fine gift for the 3 of us.

Christmas, the year was 1939.

I got a doll that was as tall as I was. I had 4 younger sisters and when I saw that doll standing behind the tree on Christmas morning, I dared not peek or even dream it was for me. My dad being the big jokester waited till last on the doll too. So then when he read the tag out loud and it said Rose, I nearly fainted! I had been asking for a doll but never dreamed I'd get one that was life size!

If I received a doll for Christmas which was my heart's desire at that time I considered myself very blessed. Gifts were not elaborate when I grew up in the war and depression years in a family of 9, so really just to get something under the tree was wonderful.

My favorite Christmas gift was the first one I was able to buy my father. My mother had died when I was just five and my dad was saddled with raising 4 boys. All he could afford to buy us at Christmas was our school clothing, When I was old enough to get a newspaper route I saved my money and bought him a new pipe, a big tin of tobacco and an ash and pipe stand. He cried and so did I, I'll never forget that Christmas.

It was something which is very difficult to find today because of all of the security measures connected to the global war against terrorism. It was a Gilbert Chemistry set. My fascination and love of that was so complete that I went on to major in chemistry in high school.

My favorite gift was a real live lamb. I named her Frosty. She had to live in the barn but she was a pet and we loved each other. Her wool was so thick and soft. Yes, I was excited beyond words that Christmas morning.

The one Christmas present that I remember when only about four years old was the child size furniture that my father made for me. I remember being so amazed that Santa would bring me something so wonderful. I don't remember when I found out my father made them but I will never forget that Christmas.
