While viviting a friend, they asked me if I had ever dealt with strange or odd behaviors in wildlife. And I said the ususal "rabies, male bird aggression, birds of prey with judgement problems and such...why? Then they took me to a bedroom window that holds a window airconditioner and adked me to watch carefully. I observed several Robins land on the airconditioner and start pecking at the window putty around the panes of glass. They would then either drop it or carry it off. Other Robins seemed quite interested in trying to get in past the airconditioner. This I have never seen before and I am quite perplexed as to why the Robins are doing this. Birds do use sand and fine grainy rocks to help crush seeds in their gullet, but the chunks of putty are too large for such use for these birds. Anybody seen this behavior in the Robins in their area?

We had a red-tailed hawk who would chase small birds with a vengence. Prob. he couldn't turn as fast and would hit the house.

Can you also tell me how they get it, ie do they have farms for these birds or do they hunt them from the wild and also if they kill them.

The main thing is that it releases energy. Once we have sufficient energy reserve it can be used upto say atleast 10 mins. But we can't stay without oxygen for more than 5 mins. Why?

It can't possibly be coz of the cerebrospinal fluid providing buoyancy(as is given in most books) coz weight lost by body is gained by liquid & this liquid is within us itself.

Last night I watched an Explorer documentary on hippos, and I found it fascinating. I had read that they were the most dangerous animals in Africa, but I had no idea that their bodies were able to adapt so well to their environment. Despite what I studied in school, I had always pictured hippos as these huggable creatures that were soft, but sensitive about their weight.

What should one do to avoid getting gobbled alive by one, like the man in the documentary? Have you ever seen one up close that wasn’t locked up in captivity?

The large plant eating dinosaurs consumed huge amounts of food daily and didn't it process very effeciently. How did they not manage to out eat their environment ? I mean long would a forest take to recover after a herd of dinosaurs just ravaged it ? The trail of destruction must have been incredible.
Thanks

There were three of them hidden in crevices of an aerosol deterrant which sits outside my bedroom window on the ledge. They were milimetre or two long with fairly flat bodies looked a bit like apple pips but symetrical either end of body with several segments to body , looked similar to a flat brown woodlouse but smaller. I squashed them as I got a feelingthey were not good bugs and could tell immediately that they were blood sucking insects from the blood and amount that was shown upon doing so. I was concverned they were parasitic like bed bugs or ticks but thought ticks were grey? And bed bugs living outside on my window ledge ? Its too cold for them is nt it
