Both are 'great apes'. The gorilla is much bigger than the chimpanze. Gorilla's are on the endangered species list . . . chimpanzes are not (at least as far as I know).
A chimpanze went into space. He wrote home to his gorilla friend who didn't get to go.
However, chimpanzes are prisoners of science labs where they are experimented on unmercifully for everything! Gorillas are studied to see if they can paint, and communicate.
Which is smarter? I guess it depends on which side of the cage they are on???
Why don't you like orangatangs? They're pretty smart, too!

Gorillas and chimpanzees (common and bonobo) are both primates, and member of the hominids, or 'Great Apes'. This includes gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpazees and humans (and their ancestors).
Howver, they are belong to genuses, Gorilla gorilla in the Gorilla genus, Pan troglodytes and Pan paniscus in the Pan genus.
Gorillas are much bigger, and mainly herbivorous- leaf eating. Gorillas live in small family groups of one silverback, dominant male, his harem of females, and their offspring.
Chimpanzees are smaller, and more omnivorous. They eat fruit and insects and hunt other snimals (including other monkeys) for meat. Chimpanzees live in larger multi male, multi female groups. The hierarchy of dominance is more complex, resulting in shifting political alliances between groups of males. Unlike gorillas, if a top male is overthrown, he may well live to tell the tale and stay in the group. Gorillas often fight to the death, and have to go off on their own if overthrown.
Wild chimpanzees exhibit complex social behaviour, and a wide variety of feeding methods including tool use, which is generally taken as a indication of higher intelligence. However, chimpanzee lifestyles are more akin to our own, so we are biased in seeing their mental skills more easily. Gorillas are harder study in the wild.
In captivity, both chompanzees and gorillas have shown high levels of intelligence, especially when trained.
The answer to who is smarter depends on the criteria you use

both primates are closely related to human beings. modern chimpanzees use tools, in a recent research indicates that chimpanzees stone tool use dates to 4300 years ago, a study also revealed that the use of such advanced tools such as spears, that sharpen by their teeth, 40 years ago scientist taught chims sign language and taught them how to ride motorbike... gorillas are closely related to humans and considered as highly intelligent than other primates, gorillas have been taught sign language, there are also records in 2005 that gorillas also using tools in the wild, a female gorilla was recorded using a stick as if to gauge the depth of water whilst crossing a swamp, a second female was seen using a tree stump as a bridge and also as a support whilst fishing in the swamp, also discovered in congo that a gorilla using rocks to smash open palm nuts

Chimps are way smarter at the things homo sapiens thinks are smart. Of course, we're biased.

they are both just as smart
