Some animals build homes (eg, ants, wasps, birds) but not lions, monkeys, giraffes etc. Why? Are they lazier, or just stupid?

You can be in the sea, or even attacked by a grumpy elephant, gorged by a charging rhino, but none of man's inventions should intervene. Direct attacks only. Nothing like sneaky rabbit burrows that can cause you to go plummeting over the edge of a cliff. Drowning counts if you get your foot stuck in a giant clam or attacked by a monster crab.

Claws, teeth, stinger, tusks, horns, etc. I know most frogs would fit into that category having only a long, sticky tongue for catching flies and other bugs. Also the majority of turtles, excluding the snapping turtle. Butterflies and perhaps manatees. Anything else?

Here's a picture I took of it:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/themarbleintheoatmeal/IMG_0788.jpg

I found it in my driveway yesterday. Really freaked me out. I thought it was some weird cross between an ant, a spider and a bumblebee. I nudged it with a stick, but it was already dead. I left it alone, and went out to check on it a couple hours later, but it was gone. Someone might have squished it or ran it over. I wish I had kept it now, because I've never seen anything like it before!

Many species of bats became protected by the Wildlife & Countryside Act. What does 'protected' actually mean? Obviously they are not hunted or killed, but apart from that, what other advantages does being protected offer?
