Well, as far as I can tell it is prompted by jealousy... if a dog cannot eat the food it has it will bury it for later to conceal it from others. My dog never buries anything, instead he just eats it as fast as he can or leaves it laying around outside for later he has never been worried that my other dog will take it from him he is not jealous at all. However my friend has a dog who is extremely jealous of her 2 other dogs over regular food, treats, bones and she buries everything just to keep it all to herself. For some reason it is only dogs who are very jealous of food that bury things... at least in my experience. It is interesting to note that wolves generally do not bury food like their cousins the dog, because they have to share with their pack mates or they may all starve. I think dogs that bury food are paranoid and jealous types of dogs because as I said neither of my 2 dogs bury their bones at all in fact my female will just leave it if she doesnt want it and will let the other dog take it and eat it. Neither of them are food aggressive, but the other dog I mentioned is extremely food aggressive and will growl at the other dogs when they are eating or anywhere near the food dish and if she could she would bury her kibble just so the others couldnt have it. I really think the reason some dogs bury food is because they simply dont want anyone else to have it and they are worried that if they dont hide it someone will take it from them.

A dog will bury a bone to save it for later. If you watch very closely you will see that, as he is covering it up he is smelling to see if it is hidden deep enough so another dog will not find it.

It is primal instinct, to conceal it from other animals, including other dogs. It also serves to preserve it- sort of like you put food in the refrigerator.
