I have 2 questions that I am struggling with. I know the answer for them but I have no idea how to find the answer. So please tell me how to solve them.

1. Suppose you have the following six coins in your pocket : 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1, $2. How many different sums of money can you make?
-Answer: 63 Sums

2. Find the smaller of 2^175 and 5^75 without a calculator.
- Answer: 5^75

wats the diff, the textbook is confussing me with the two, becasue the teacher told us to use log base 2...and i used log base 10 ( direct imput into calculator - cos calculator is alwasy base 10 right?) and i STILL got the right answeer ...werid?

also can u use log base 2 on a calcualtor? or do u have to manually do change of base everytime?!?

By the common intuitive meaning of multiplication we can see that

4 * 3 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3

It can also be seen that for a non-zero x
x = 1 + 1 + ........+ 1 ( x terms )

Now we multiply through by x
x^2 = x + x +.............+ x ( x terms )

Then we take the derivative with respect to x
2x = 1 + 1 + ...............+ 1 ( x terms )

Now we see that the right hand side is x which gives us
2x = x

2 = 1
