y = x + 6 >>>Equation 1
y = -2x - 3 >>>Equation 2
Substitute y = x + 6 into equation 2
x + 6 = -2x - 3
x + 2x = -3 - 6
3x = -9
x = -9 / 3
x = -3
Substitute x = -3 into equation 1
y = x + 6
y = -3 + 6
y = 3
Thus x = -3 and y = 3

Sure Ryan, look at what you have here:
All you need to see is that
y=x+6 AND
y = -2x+3
What does that tell you???
If I am A and I am B then A must be the same as B right? cause both are ME.
So?
x+6 = -2x+3 ==> 3x = -3 ==> x=-1;
and y?
pick any... y=x+6 = 5.

Watch it! what everyone already told you about doing "x+6 = -2x-3" IS NOT substitution!
Substitution is just about that. Look:
y=x+6
y=-2x-3
Pick any and clear "x". I'll take the first one:
y=x+6 >> y-6=x >> x=y-6
Now, substitute x in the other equation:
y = -2. (y-6) - 3
y = -2y + 12 - 3
y + 2y = 12-3
3y = 9
y = 9 : 3
y = 3
Now that you have "y" you can clear "x" in both situations.

y has two definitions, namely:
y = x + 6 and
y= - 2x - 3
Equate the two definitions and find x:
x + 6 = - 2x - 3
3x = - 9
x = - 3
Compute for y by plugging - 3 for x:
y = - 3 + 6
y = 3
Answer: x = - 3 and y = 3
Prove the equality of sides of your 2 original definitions:
3 = - 3 + 6
3 = 3
3 = - 2(- 3) - 3
3 = 6 - 3
3 = 3

1. y=x+6 y=-2x-3 (both Ys are the same Y right?)
2. y=y therefore x+6=-2x-3 (you replace what y is with what else y is)
3. x+2x+6=-3
4. x+2x=-6-3
5. 3x=-9
6. x=-3

x+6 = -2x-3
add 3 to both sides
x+9 = -2x
subtract x from both sides
9 = -3x
divide both sides by -3
3=x
y=3+6 and y=(-2)3-3
y=9 and y=-9

y = x + 6 --- (1)
y = -2x - 3 --- (2)
Substitute (1) into (2),
y = -2x - 3
x + 6 = -2x - 3
x + 2x = -3 - 6
3x = -9
x = -9 / 3
x = -3 --- (3)
Substitute (3) into (1),
y = x + 6
y = -3 + 6
y = 3
So, x = -3 and y = 3
