y = 2(x - 5)^(-4)
dy/dx = -4(2)(x - 5)^(-5)(1) = -8(x - 5)^(-5) = -8/(x-5)^5

2007-09-08 14:39:46 · answer #1 · answered by Runa 7 · 1 0

Let u = x-5

y = 2/u^4

dy/dx = dy/du*du/dx

= -8/u^5 * 1 = -8/(x-5)^5

suppose x-5=u then y=2/u^4
y=2u^(-4)
y'=2*(-4)*u'*u^(-5)
y'=-8u'u^(-5) (u=x-5,u'=1)
y'=-8/(x-5)^5

y=2/(x-5)^4
y=2(x-5)^-4
y'=2(-4)(x-5)^-5
y'=-8/(x-5)^5
